Although once we are through this we are all going to have to pay it back in some way so expect larger bills for council tax and so on in the future. We will be paying for this for the rest of our lives! Extra taxes, closure of services like adult social care, special need schools, libraries, etc.. Mike at Vauxhall
Taken £23, dropping to 3 hours tomorrow. Really should just close, have implemented several anti virus measures. Like I said, I should just close, but finding it hard to just let go. kobblers

I hear ya, mate - I went into work this morning and was home by eleven. I kept wandering around my shop with a weird, surreal feeling and a sense of loss. It was so difficult walking out It looks like we'll be shut for some time. Rick. Mike at Vauxhall

grahamparker
Well after long and careful consideration of my business/employee/health in the current climate and even after a very busy day i think i need to think of others so i have decided to close the same as many others on here have or are doing. This has been a real hard and difficult choice for me but i believe if i don't i am putting others and myself at risk for monetary gain. Therefore i will no longer be cutting any keys for forum members until we all can safely return to work. Stay safe and i hope no one loses there business as a result of this dreadful Virus and we can all come back stronger in the future. kobblers

petercoulson
So a little update, if you're self employed the government are working hard on a solution as to how much you should receive as its not easy to calculate and Universal Credit is definitely worth applying for as it can be quite an amount once different options are added in. If you're employed or employ and close then staff should be furloughed (laid off on pay) notify hmrc when the mechanism is in place and 80% of their February wage will be paid. If your staff agree to a 20% temporary cut this will then cost you nothing.

petercoulson
More now on financial help for the self-employed in the UK. As our assistant political editor outlined a little earlier, things could be about to change. So far, the UK government has said it will pay the wages of employees unable to work due to the pandemic. But that does not include the self-employed. Speaking in the Commons a few moments ago, Chancellor Rishi Sunak said there were "genuine practical and principle reasons" to roll out a similar scheme for freelancers. "Of course there have been people whose incomes have been impacted by what is happening," he said. "But there are also millions of people who are self-employed whose incomes may not have been impacted and indeed might be increasing. "The ability for the government to distinguish between those people based on tax returns that are over a year and a half out of date, poses some very significant challenges in terms of fairness and affordability." He added that the Treasury had been looking into measures in "intense detail" over the past week, but would not commit to a date when more help would be made available. kobblers
