Shoe Repairer Forum

COVID-19 Information for you

Recommended Posts

I'm sure it is in your case but we're in the centre of a large, and ever increasing, housing area that doesn't have very many shops or facilities, so although we don't have that sort of business customer, we are the only shoe repairer/key cutter in about a 10 mile radius and the locals rely on us, and we do get a fair few repairs posted in now as well.

It could come down to running a collection and drop off service for the locals I suppose.

Its up to you as individual shop owners, key cutting and a few other items put you in the essential bracket just weigh up if it's worth it or not - grants will be available if you have to close depending on your rateable value which may swing your choice

So with most of the country now in Tier 4 (have to say the situation is a lot worse than you read/see.hear a senior ambulance officer described it as Armageddon at the moment hospital wise) the decision about opening/closing again hits us. Most if not all of the forum members will be allowed to open under the rules but as always it is your own decision.

The rules are fairly clear for shoe repairs if you identify mostly for shoe repairs, if you are mainly or only key cutting and ancillaries you can fall under 2 brackets plus there's the dry cleaning side as well. Note it's can stay open but this can be a get out clause for some councils not to pay compensation where it is available - it seems around the country some councils are more understanding than other

Businesses and venues which can stay open

Other businesses and venues are permitted to stay open, following COVID-19 secure guidelines. This includes those providing essential goods and services, including:

  • essential retail such as food shops, supermarkets, pharmacies, garden centres, building merchants and suppliers of building products and off-licences
  • market stalls selling essential retail may also stay open
  • businesses providing repair services may also stay open, where they primarily offer repair services
  • petrol stations, automatic (but not manual) car washes, vehicle repair and MOT services, bicycle shops, and taxi and vehicle hire businesses
  • banks, building societies, post offices, short-term loan providers and money transfer businesses
  • funeral directors
  • laundrettes and dry cleaners
  • medical and dental services
  • vets and pet shops
  • animal rescue centres, boarding facilities, and animal groomers (may continue to be used for animal welfare, rather than aesthetic purposes)
  • agricultural supplies shops
  • mobility and disability support shops
  • storage and distribution facilities
  • car parks, public toilets and motorway service areas
  • outdoor playgrounds
  • outdoor gym, pools, sports courts and facilities
  • golf courses
  • archery/driving/shooting ranges (outdoors)
  • outdoor riding centres
  • places of worship
  • crematoriums and burial grounds

Further to the grants announcement I'm afraid the waters are murky over how much you may get and if you even qualify for a grant - but there is another fund that could apply only time will tell, it is a route I will have to take because we are not retail but all our customers are so hoping a grant will be made through the second route for us

Further information

  • the one-off top-ups will be granted to closed businesses as follows:
  • £4,000 for businesses with a rateable value of £15,000 or under
  • £6,000 for businesses with a rateable value between £15,000 and £51,000
  • £9,000 for businesses with a rateable value of over £51,000
  • any business which is legally required to close, and which cannot operate effectively remotely, is eligible for a grant

A further £594 million is also being made available for Local Authorities and the Devolved Administrations to support other businesses not eligible for the grants, that might be affected by the restrictions. Businesses should apply to their Local Authorities.

This is where the new statement of shops that can stay open will hurt some of us.

It states businesses providing repair services as long as it's their primary service can stay open, which is ok if you still have good footfall but as people should be staying at home there isn't going to many around for most of us.

I think this will stop my insurance paying out this time as well, seeing as the clause is based on government closure.

So it's sit at home and potentially get no insurance or open up and take no money!!

Decisions decisions!!
