I think you can defer it Mick. From all I've spoken to you have to do it.

I know that to NOT do it you need exceptional circumstance or you will be made to do it

I did it years ago, whilst I worked for another company - best rest ever (almost fell asleep lol)

also wages are capped.. so put in a claim for reasonable loss and you will do ok

Yes you can defer it, I have done so a couple of times, I have also done jury service a couple of times.Remember you could get involved in a complicated case that lasts for months, if you cannot afford to lose the time, GET IT DEFERRED........

How to defer

Write to the Jury Central Summoning Bureau explaining why you want to defer. Include evidence showing that you’ll not be available, for example:

  • proof that you’ve booked a holiday
  • a letter from your doctor
  • a letter from your employer explaining why they’ll not give you time off

You must also list the dates when you’ll be available in the 12 months after you were supposed to start jury duty.

Jury Central Summoning Bureau
jurysummoning@justice.gov.uk
Telephone: 0300 456 1024
Welsh language telephone: 0300 303 5173
Monday to Thursday 9am to 5pm
Friday 9am to 3pm

seems you can, but they still want you to go later

isnt jury service a type of community sevice ?

I understand it's a civic duty, having a holiday booked is not considered an excuse,

A letter from your employer is not considered an excuse,

Ill health is considered an excuse,

Self employment with considerable damage to your business is considered an excuse.

Never been asked yet, but as a director of a security company my plan was always to point out that due to my position there is a good chance I am likely to have had contact with a suspect, or any number of witnesses so it might be a waste of everyone's time.....

I'll let you know how I get on if it every becomes an issue!

Under the Juries Act 1974, to qualify for jury service, a person must be: between the ages of 18 and 70 years old; registered to vote in parliamentary or local government elections; a registered citizen in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for at least five years since their 13th birthday.

As of the 01 December the upper age limit for jurors in England and Wales will be raised from 70 to 75. The new age limit, to be introduced on 1 December, will better reflect the healthy life expectancy of people in England and Wales and mean juries are more representative of the communities they serve.
