Computer Virus

Recommended Posts

I've just had my backup computer back from Mr Computer Mender, seems the problem was 3 viruses in the boot up. I thought I was covered with AVG, seems not. He's installed Microsoft Security Essentials he recommends it. It seems AVG missed the viruses. If you have AVG basic protection get rid. Can I say that? Anyway £35 don't seem to bad to get all my stuff back. \:D/ \:D/

The biggest problem all anti-virus vendors face is that the nature of the business is reactive rather than pro-active.

Viruses have to be created, released into the wild, and then detected before a solution can be put in place.

There is a certain amount of broad signature based heuristic detection that can be applied, but it's almost always a case of after the horse has bolted the barn door gets closed.

Most reputable free AV programs are fine but their object is obviously to sell you something eventually and therefore certain things are not covered in the hope you will buy the super-duper whizz bang version to keep you safe.

If you want to be certain your PC is virus free and can't be hacked - disconnect it from the internet, never add software that didn't come on a disc from a well-known company (Microsoft, Adobe etc etc) and never let anyone else use it.

It won't be much use for anything except typing letters, but you'll be safe !

AVG paid for (not free version) and Malwarebytes Anti spyware paid for version will monitor your computer in real time and warn you ofHijack attempts. Free versions of these progs do not give this added protection. (yer gets what yer pays for).

Since taking Norton off years ago I've never had to pay for any sort of antivirus/firewall and I've had a lot less problems than I ever had with paid for software. :)

I agree, you buy anti virus software and it takes over your computer worse than a bleedin virus. Bloody Norton used to drive me mad, telling me its found this that and the other, so you click repair (or whatever it is) and it's looks like its doing the job but it always fails...pile of shite IMO

Don't judge all anti-virus by your experience with Norton. I agree; it is horrible software. Almost as bad a some viruses. Unlike Norton, there are a lot of really good programs that work quietly in the background and only ever tell you if there is a REAL problem.

Name names then redcap...

Nod32 from Eset. Relatively cheap, not resource hungry and just gets on with it :D I run it on our system at Standard, laptops home PC and I-Pad, no issues, no problems and NO Virus!!!

Been using this software for over 8 years :D

Download it online, easy peasy, the 'Internet Security' or 'smart Security' products are the one's I would recommend :D

IPads can't get viruses AFAIK :-k

Same as IPhones and Macs, or anything Apple :-k

I think that's the theory, however, common sense suggests a cautious approach. There was news recently about a virus/trojan or something affecting apple products.

Regular system updates should be enough to keep you clear as far as I'm aware.
