TheCustomer
Low prices are not the answer, better value is. I agree totally with this, although it's hard for some customers to judge and some are just plain stupid. e.g. its hard to get them to look at the price per lb provided to them in the supermarkets, let alone judge the quality of the product. I guess I am better than most. You've never been passed my shop at 01:30 then No sorry, I never did see this and of course I do tend to notice shoe repair shop. Maybe its just the way they work round here as its a bit 9-5 mon-fri..... or maybe soon to be mon-thur... If you ever did get so busy that you regularly needed someone to work on your bench an extra 20 hours a week, would you have trouble hiring someone for those unsociable hours? Recently I had a competitor open up a couple of miles away from me & asked my grandad (retired businessman, who made far more than I ever will! ) what I should do in regards to a new competitor he said "do nothing" this was the best bit of advice I have ever received. the competitors doing work half my price, yet so far I haven't noticed them! in fact engraving (their main line) is going so well I'm expanding it! Now, there's thinking like a businessman rather than a bloke making a few quid.. Interesting. I must admit making 'panic' decisions in the past when faced with a similar customer/competitor situation, when at the least I should have just waited to see. On the subject of working late, did you ever consider setting up an online repair service and getting some people to work for you while you are not at the shop to take the extra load? Sure there are up's and downs to sending things in the post, I have read some of those comments from other posts on here, but as they say, Eventually, all Barbers go home.. so I guess its do-able? x minit uk
We charge £7.99 for Ladies Soles , or £9.99 for Sole and Heel , does this make us "two bob billies" ?, its Ok for people in affluent areas to hike the prices ( one of our competitors in a well off area 10 miles away charges £25 !) , but when your big part of your Customers customers are not that well off and only buy "budget" Shoes and Boots in the £10 to £30 bracket it still takes some convincing to get them to have the job done when they ask for Heels and the Soles are obviously on the way out.And just for reference we have another competitor 10 miles away in the Centre of Birmingham who only charges £5 for Ladies Soles and £3 for Heels , and we sometimes think we are busy Fools !. Looks like you have convinced yourself that your customers will not pay more, I worked in Kings heath, longbridge, Fiveways, never failed to get an average price of £10 per customer. Places like Harbourne, sutton, etc £15-£20 per customer.

Also, retail is different, you're selling commodities, where selling niche product. It's all about sale and demand, if your takings are down and you need to boost them, you would be crazy NOT to try and do deals. However, if you're doing well and earning, you may wish to preserve your margin, horses for courses Basis business economics
St.Am92
Just had a conversation with a bloke from Enfield who owns 2 dry cleaning shops and is opening 1 in my high street. He wants me to do some shoe repairs for him which he will bring up from London as he will be coming here every day.He uses a multiple that CARE for SHOES . They charge £4.00 for ladies heels and give him 40% discount. Now I charge £6.95 for ladies heels so can someone give me some advice on how the f****ing hell this is gonna work!!!! No idea exactly on numbers of pairs, but after a few taps of the calculator I'm thinking is it worth cutting my own throat for a few quid a week,as I don't think it's gonna be massive amounts of work. Any suggestions/help please Just quote him your normal prices,if he wants to make more out of his customers he can add on 10/15% on top.Remember you have to take into account your running costs eg: £25 job less 40% costs=£15.00 profit. If you're going to give him 30% off = £7.50 it leaves you with the same and you've had to do all the work for it! Its your skill, talent and your there to make money for your business not supplement someone else's.This is how i deal with my agency work though i do give the agents a good discount on their own personal items.
