Rick,

the link had become corrupted when the site was transfered. this is a problem I am aware off and have been sorting them out along the way!

you can now click on the link & all should follow through.

I also see that Tel has some great repairer related links on his youtube page. Nice work Terry.

Jobs a good un Terry

tutorial came in handy today when I had to explain why I had charged the amount I did for reparing some guys Barkers, when he was shown the tutorial he laffed and said we must be mad for still repairing shoes that way he thought it was all done by machine was only too pleased to coff up the dosh

Did you not quote a price before he left the shop? (strange as this would be the first thing i would do on a job of this description to make sure the customer was willing to pay for it) and was aware of why it would cost the amount you were quoting him before he left the shop?

Not giving him a rough idea can only put you in a awkward position on his return.

IF one of my staff members took in a job without giving the customer a general guide to the price and time involved to do the job....................WORDS WOULD BE SAID!! [-X lol

ps nice pictures.

I agree.

What happens when you haven't asked for any money up front and he asks for a price halfway out the door?

I'd be worried that he'd get home and think "ah f*** it, I'll buy a new pair instead.

From my early apprenticeship days ( a lifetime ago, 42 years to be exact. Christ that scares me!) I seem to remember something called mulling liquid for softening leather, had a nice smell. I could have dreamt it though. Waldorf might remember it. :)

the saoking of the welt is for 3 reasons in realality 1 is as stated to swell the welt which will allow the awl to push througheasier and not cut through thus making a smaller and tighter hole

2as also stated when it dries it forms a tighter seal but the third and main reason being that becouse the welt is wet it allows the sticth to be pulled tighter as it squeezs it much like when squeezing a sponge and thus as it dries it becomes tighter ( remember though the trick being to soak the welt for an hour or 2 and then wrap in newspaper overnight to draw out excess water )
