ironplanet uk900
Media & Tesco etc recon people aren't spending.. Tesco has put on hold 40 odd new sites and is closing 40 odd non profit site!! My theory is, People are spending, but in supermarket case's I think there are two major factors. 1, Aldi,Liddl, pound shops and the like are steeling their trade with some quality cheap products and people are shopping around. 2, I think the 3 major supermarkets have saturated the market with mega superstores, smaller stores, petrol stations etc that they are becoming victims of their own success!! just Sayin! k4mrc
Lee
I was watching a program on BBC2 last night (don't know what it was called) but it was about how we came to the current economics and the divide between the top 1% and investments they made on the back of consumer credit like mortgages. The rich getting richer off the poorer. it was well worth the watch. nothing to do with tesco.... just saying. Re tesco. With its links now to this trade I wonder how the 40 closures and stoppages of new branches is playing out to Timpson expansion. ironplanet uk900
Lee
Ive stopped spending our money there as has some of my family so they lost a lot of turnover putting in timpson here. Enough probably to have effected the bottom line... lol
ironplanet uk900
I had a Timpson employee asking for a job last week, as he had had a letter saying he was on a list of redundancy's! he told me that they had put on hold 40 new sites, not sure if these are Tesco sites. I've always wondered how the likes of Tesco view Timpson prices!! and weather they actually fit in in their highly competitive world. just sayin. marky1
i heard from a very good source that tescos have asked timpsons out of their stores as people have complained about noise and smells so they have to open in pods in the car parks thats why they are opening 150 pods there not new ones is just there being asked out of the stores, also they have halfed the bonus on most services execpt key shoes, 1 guy was 100 quid down on bonus , also heard all staff cant have last week in march of and james has called all area managers and adms to a meeting in april to make a big announcement, all said and done its haer say but i have also had staff ask me for work as they are fed up to the high teeth
Mike at Vauxhall
Timpsons have just opened a pod in tesco old Kent road south London. Never had a unit inside.
Mike at Vauxhall
It's a good mile or so from my shop. But I never really worry about competition from timpson. They don't seem to compete on both price or service.
Count Muppet
i heard from a very good source that tescos have asked timpsons out of their stores as people have complained about noise and smells so they have to open in pods in the car parks thats why they are opening 150 pods there not new ones is just there being asked out of the stores, also they have halfed the bonus on most services execpt key shoes, 1 guy was 100 quid down on bonus , also heard all staff cant have last week in march of and james has called all area managers and adms to a meeting in april to make a big announcement, all said and done its haer say but i have also had staff ask me for work as they are fed up to the high teeth Don't know who this very good source was but I think they may be mis-informed or maybe just jumping to conclusions. I can't imagine the idea of branches opening in pods has anything to do with noise and smells. If that was the case, all of the shops inside the tescos would probably have been fitted with better extraction and doors on the units. It is tesco themselves who want the shops completely open as if it is part of their store. I think though that it may have more to do with space in the store. You all know how important every inch of display space is. Having a branch in a pod give timpson and tesco both the opportunity to see how well the shop will do without wasting thousands on shop fitting. If it doesn't work out, a crane picks up the shop and takes it elsewhere. The haven't halved the bonus on anything other than mobile phone repairs. This is simply because the profits are not so high as in other services. The only other service that has half the bonus is dry cleaning when not done in branch. This has always been the case, for at least the last 10 years since we owned sketchley. The last week in March is now available to book for holiday due to the mobile managers conference being cancelled. Each area has probably at least 4 mobile managers, these are people who cover the shops when people are on holiday/day off/sick. They would not be able to hold a 2 day conference if there were shops without staff because of holiday. I know nothing of the meeting at the end of April maybe there is one as they have them twice a year. Lee and k4mrc

Lee
you forget that every town also has at least 1, usually successful "other" cobblers shop. Timpson may be the biggest player but they ain't the only player. derek and k4mrc

Count Muppet
Some of us realise that there are people more skilled than us, others think that because we are the biggest, we must be the best. I'm happy to have found this forum many years ago. It has given me some good knowledge and helped me earn some good money which I wouldn't have done without it and despite my difficulty in meeting new people, I now always make a point of popping into an independant whenever I see one. I've met a few of the members of this forum over the years but very rarely introduce myself as a member of the forum. Probably nothing to do with the topic, but thought I would let you know that some of us know you are there and some of us appreciate your skills. There is my shop and a T's plus a pod in tescos less than 1 mile away. The lad from the T shop comes to see me almost every Tuesday on his day off. In fact I am looking out for a new member of staff (experienced ) now as the manager from my other shop is retiring before the end of this year. If it is a T's guy or wherever I would welcome the right person.
Lee
Steve my local Timpson & I started in shoe repairing the same year, we get on well, we always say hello when ever we see each other. He cycles past me when I'm dropping my daughter off to school each day, But I still have the overwhelming urge to lunge at him & push him off, is that naughty? k4mrc
