When changing blanks - do you switch off the key-machine?

Recommended Posts

Our key-machines are used by a number of different people, usually locksmiths walking in, who are allowed to cut their keys themselves.

I noticed, that it's somehow "cool" or common practice to just leave the machine running, while one changes the blank.

That has now been strictly forbidden, because someone could accidentally just bump into the keycutter - and "chop" goes the finger.

I of course always turned it off - Not - and in 35 years I have one small scar to prove it - I know it makes sense -Like turning off the elctric when I wire a fused spur up and so does staying under the speed limit, Ok until you get caught. In todays solictor and 'We make plenty of bucks from you' law firms, if you employ people YOU MUST comply and even then some smart low life solicitor will prove that you should have fitted CCTV above the cutters and safety intelocks as his client was never stopped from doing it until the day he lost 3 fingers.

I dont let anyone come into my shop and use my machines except Mrs boss. I dont turn the machine off when I change the blank and if you want to come up behind me when I'm opperating any sort of machine, your going to get a clump.

There, now p%*s off, you've had your bloody toolbox talk for this month. :)

PS Always, always wear safety glasses. you have limited control over swarf.

Damn right I had to have a rusty bit of metal scraped off my eyeball with a scalpel 2 days after getting it in my eye. Doc said if I'd left it much longer infection could have got worse and could have lost the sight in one eye. Now I always wear goggles.

I like all my fingers on my hand so its always off for me.

Personally anyone who doesn't :buff: .

But thats just my opinion.

I have even given one of our employees a written and verbal warning about

not switching the machines off as there is no way he is claiming compensation

when a finger or two disapear.
