Dying to know . . .

Recommended Posts

I've had the August flyer from Charles Birch, which features TRG Shoe Dyes from 'The world's No 1 producer of shoe dyes'!

So how come I've never heard of TRG after 35 years in the leather trade? Or . . . is this a rebranding of the Tarrago range? The packaging and typefaces look pretty similar and the TaRraGo fits remarkably well. Could this also explain why T Colledge are selling off their Tarrago stuff at reduced prices to clear the decks for a new range?

Any thoughts appreciated!

Hi everyone,

I am not sure that a COPY of our products, done in eastern countries, can be good. There are already other copies in the market you can maybe grant for even cheaper. But they will not be the TARRAGO quality, for sure.

Have a look at the september show, TARRAGO original products will CONTINUE to be there ,as for all these years!

Thank you.

On the face of it, the implication seems to be that Charles Birch are selling a cheap look-alike of Tarrago products, without actually mentioning the Tarrago name.

I've always been very impressed by the quality of Tarrago dyes and creams, so if Tarrago are saying that this product is not theirs, I'll think I'll avoid it until we get a definitive answer. If it's the only range that CB are going to stock, then I'll be buying elsewhere!

Hello Everyone

I have read with interest the various correspondence regarding our new range of TRG dyes and the TRG brand generally.

TRG is a new brand created by a company founded in January of this year in Barcelona called TRG Bestnets,SL. The proprietor

of this company is Senor Joaquim Tarrago whose great grandfather started to make dyes shortly after the second world war.

The company that he helped to expand massively in the last decade was taken over in an aggressive bid by the French company

Sapphyr last year. Sapphyr continue to distribute the Tarrago brand of products.

Mark Jackson and I visited the Wiesbaden Fair in the Spring and one of our objectives was to source a good range of shoe colour

dyes to replace the Dylon Shoe Colour range that had been discontinued and the range of colours now unavailable from Lady Esquire.

With Punch Leather and Suede Dye also recently discontinued, we felt that the shoe repairer also deserved a choice rather than us

selling only the Dylon brand.

We met Joaquim who had assembled a full display of products in only three months of production. However as he is a chemical engineer

by profession, he has assured us that his new formulations are even better than the ones he put into the Tarrago brand, and he has

worked hard to make the packaging clear and modern.

Personally I think the packaging is completely different to Tarrago, and as he can no longer trade with his own family name, TRG

is a reasonable compromise. There is clearly no attempt to pass this new brand off as Tarrago or imitate the old brand, it is simply a new

brand in the dyes market.

Joaquim, who is probably one of the nicest chaps I know, will be on our stand at Doncaster where I am sure he will be very pleased

to answer any further questions personally. In the meantime I would be pleased to give any of you a free sample of the product for

you to test the quality - please quote "CW" on your order.

Regards

Chris Wilson

I have some questions

1.. Will TRG dyes only be availiable through Birches and if so why?

2 ..Will the original Tarrago Dye still be available from Colledges and if not why?

3 ..How different is the TRG dye from the Tarrago dye if anything and not just the obvious packaging.

4.. Does Senor Joaquim Tarrago still have any interest in the Tarrago Brand

5.. Who else other than Colledges were able to sell the Tarrago Brand did they have sole rights and is this why the name has been changed to enable others to wholesale the product

6.. Am I sceptical, ..you bet I am.

and

7... Anyone else want to speak their mind?

No but Chris did! \:D/

Try before you buy, you can't get any fairer than that.

Cant see the point if you already use Tarrago products :smt102

Please have a look at http://www.tarrago.com/anglfl/frempa.htm, you will have a short video about the TARRAGO company, and also a short description about our origins.

TARRAGO Brands exist since 1940. There is no Senor Tarrago having any interest in the Productos Tarrago Companies nor the TARRAGO Brands.

TARRAGO continues, like always, to be produced in Manresa, SPAIN. Our sole distributor in UK is and continues to be COLLEDGE & Sons. ORIGINAL TARRAGO COLOR DYE and all the other products from our TARRAGO ranges will of course continue to be available at Colledge & Sons.

Productos TARRAGO has no secondary brands. We ONLY produce TARRAGO products. Whatever copies or simple packaging imitations are not ours.

I hope I answered to all your questions as required, and I could clear some doubts. In any case, we appreciate there is concurrence, we will just continue to do high quality products as we have always done.

Thank you

Thank you for your reply. I have now and have always had complete faith in Tarrago products and if what you say is true (time will tell, just me being sceptical again) will continue to purchase them from COLLEDGE & Sons and will not accept substitutes. I dare say Messers Birch & Co have had to come up with something so as not to loose out. Hence TRG. I could be wrong, but i doubt it. lol

It's good to see that Chris Wilson has come on board to put the TRG side of this story. Perhaps the CB flyer should have made it clear that this is a new brand. I may well take up the offer of a free sample, just to give it a try.

In response to Tarrago's endorsement of T Colledge as their only UK distributor, can they explain why the range of colours available in the renovating shoe creams has been steadily dwindling? I wanted to order Black, Red and White, and found that all three have been deleted from Colledge's website. These are best-selling colours (in our shop, at least), and it's pretty frustrating to have to search around for alternative products.

Dear All

Just by way of confirmation (and in answer to RIJ's questions) I am pleased to confirm that I agree with all the

points made by the company Tarrago.

I am pleased for RIJ to test the TRG product and compare it to the Tarrago brand and report his findings, positive

or otherwise on the Forum. There is no need for sceptism it is a new product launch offering more choice to Birch

customers - simple as that.

Yes TRG is exclusive to Birch. It is normal when spending a lot of money on marketing a new range to ensure that

one's competition can't "piggy back" on board; in the same way Tarrago and Benchmark brands are excusive to Birch's

competitors.

See you all in Doncaster or, better still at the cycle event around the UK and in Rutland.

Regards

Chris

  • 1 month later...

Great Dyes , just used some today , and a big pat on the back to however designed the Colour Chart , the pre -punched holes enable you to offer the chart up to the item you want to match and get the correct colour , which are actually a good match to what is in the jar .

Well Done TRG , hope Chris has a big box of charts at the show !
