i didnt think johnsons and timpsons were on friendly terms but i guess people just sacrifice their principles and greed just takes over when you get to their level.

i think the only way you can beat johnsons quickly is to offer dry cleaning cheaper than them

i would source a dry cleaner to come and collect the work and then just charge your customer the same dont earn any money out of them, id then phone the boss of johnsons and explain to him that you will continue to take money off him until they stop doing keys.

if they dont backdown pay for a full spread ad (cost 200 quid max) in your local newspaper also ask the paper to run a little competition and get them to put an ad on their front page, they should do this for nothing as you are offering their readers a prize the prize could be 50 quid on dry cleaning remember to push the rest of your services,

johnsons will not want to get into a fight with an independant and as soon as you go well below their price they should backdown if they still dont withdraw pay someone to stand outside their shop with a sandwich board advertising half price dry cleaning and making sure everyone knows your independant this bit is the only way you can beat these big companies that have forgotten what its like to be human

then again if timpsons are involved you got nothing really to worry about

As far as i an aware when mr "T" inherited Sketchleys after the takeover of Mr Minit ( who had taken over Sketchleys) the buisness was reorganised and Johnsons aquired the Dry Cleaning side , leaving mr "T" with the photo processing side and Shoe Repairs. As part of this deal i am pretty certain that some sort of agreement was made that Johnsons would not do Keys and Shoes , and mr "T" would not do cleaning , now think that this agreement has ran its time , hence Johnsons branching out back into Keys and Shoes, am also pretty certain that mr "T" is pushing more into the Cleaning side as well.

Also here from our local "Max" shop that following the takeover by mr "T" they too will soon be doing Keys and probalbly engraving too , where will it all end !.

Had a chat with the Johnsons manager this evening on the way home. Went like this thats me speech in marks! "Alright mate" yeah not bad. "Your firm going to pinch anymore of my business" What do you mean the keys? "Yes". "Have you cut many?" One! "One?" "One key in a month?" There's a great big book with loads of keys in it's dead hard finding them. "Who supplies you?" Charles Birch. "Really and youv'e only cut one?" Yeah we have had training but it's a pain in the arse, cutting them is easy but it's hard to find them. "Oh really welcome to the real world" I've buggered loads up practicing. "Have you"

We send them round the corner to you. " Oh great thanks" Bye :D

So I say to anybody worried about Johnsons cutting keys near you don't worry my key sales are just the same despite my first fears

Too true my friend, you get to know your keyboards and you know where most keys are without even looking in a "great big book". people don't want to stand about while some half trained idiot spends 10 mins looking in a "great big book". I sometimes think I should be a bit slower cutting keys so the customer feels like they are getting value for money instead of saying "bloody hell that was quick"!

cheers for that,

i have a johnsons in a sainsburys about 200 yards along the road and they are under cutting me, ie, £3.50 for everything.

it's mainly the students and poles etc that will travel from one side of the town to the other to save a penny if they have a bus pass.

what is also happening is that if they miscut (sp) a key they don't even try to do it right, it's just here's your money back, they come to me and try to haggle to get a chubb for £3.50, of course i refuse and they think i'm ripping them off and away they go, the next nearest place from me is more expensive and they will be too embarrassed to come back,

i got my birch bill in for august this morning, almost £500...

next month....£0.00....

i hope it's worth it to them....

anyone recommend a new supplier to me....
