Getting to the point where I dread having to cut universal keys...

The ones I've been getting from SKS are so HARD!

 

This is MORTICE keys not cylinder keys.

 

They're ruining my blades.

 

Any tips on where to source decent quality rim lock and mortice lock universal blanks from made from decent steel?

What mortice key makes are you cutting ?.

 

What machine are you using ?.

 

What blades are you buying ?.

 

We hardly use any universal blanks for mortice keys anymore, mainly buy JMA copies and they cut lovely.

I barely use universal keys, when I do , I do the first rough cut at a slant. This seems to effectively remove the hard edge. Then proceed as normal. You could also try other suppliers.

I barely ever use universal notice keys, but when I do I only ever cut half the width of the blade at a time. If I do cut more like a regular blank, there is always a problem.

I take off the main excess with the side cutter first then cut down the outside edges and cut as normal.

I don't use many universal blanks but I notice that the Rim Mortice are difficult.  Tried a new blade, using half the cutter width etc and still find some of the bits break off the shaft.  They seem really hard, yet no problems with other blanks.  Will try a genuine cutter next time.
