Dean qualifies for Ironman triathlon world championship.

As many of you know we have a little triathlon following with members of the forum (click the blog link on the navigation bar for more!). One of those Dean Edwards has progressed over the past couple of years to a world class athlete, whilst still engraving & cobbling by day!

This year he took his training to a whole new level by having a woman called Bella Bayliss becoming his coach (google the name, you’ll see she’s a household name in the ironman triathlon world) & yesterday Dean raced “Ironman UK” ironman is a world series of races, held in various countries which sees an entry from both professional athletes with big budgets behind them who talk about “training in boulder Colorado” & “sponsors” and age groupers like Dean who are raw talents with a nothing is impossible attitude competing alongside each other head to head. It’s one of the few sports in the world that embraces ANYONE who wants to be on the start line!

So what is an “ironman”

It’s a 2.4mile swim a 112mile bike & a full marathon, no breaks, no rests one after the other....

Anyone who knows Dean, or new how hard he’d trained new this was going to be a special race & as the day unfolded, even though we expected it I think we were all still stunned at Deans race!

An amazing swim had him coming out the water 9th in his age group & 95th overall. 95th might not sound great, but Ironman has the fittest bodies in the world on the start line & there where 2000 of them in the water! 95th out of 2000!

Once out of the water it was onto the bike, Dean is one strong biker & over the next 5 ½ hours Dean rode a constant pace & made up some places leaving his bike 2nd in his age group (the holy grail of qualifying in his sights!) and 25th overall.

So let’s put this into context, at this point he’d spent 6hours & 32 minutes exercising, had swam 2.4 miles & rode 112 miles before putting on trainers to run a 26.2 mile marathon! Which he then did in less than 3 ½ hours! Have any of you tried to run a marathon that quick! Let alone been racing for 6 ½ hours before hand!

Dean crossed the line in 10hours & 3minutes, in 23rd place over all & more crucially 2nd in his age group which means he has qualified for the IRONMAN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS in Kona Hawaii there was only 10 non-professional athletes in front of Dean, the rest all do this for a living! So I would like to congratulate Ironman Dean Edwards on qualifying for the world championships on the 11th October.

Good Luck & good speed.

Lee

Dean commented "I didn't waste any time collaring Craig Alexander to badger him for tips on racing Hawaii!"

Craig Alexander was 2008, 2009 & 2011 Ironman Triathlon World Champion
