Mick Friend
It will be covered in the small print its a health and safety LAW and your not above the law - so yes it's jobs for the boys but a legal one I used to charge £15.00 callout then .25p per appliance -I would say that in an office block I would have something like 15% faults Cracked plugs wrong fuse size loose terminals frayed trailing leads very worrying

Mick Friend
Of course - Then some young intrepid fire officer fresh from the Fire investigators course at Moreton in the Marsh finds the remains of the burnt out key cutting machine and traces the heat damaged wire to the socket where the plug contains a cut down six inch nail and a plug discoloured by years of overheating - Insurance company won - you lost Or Johhny slips passed mum and reaches out to touch the now switched off key machine with his sticky wet hands and is thrown backwards against the key rack slumping lifeless to the floor - Health and safety seize the shop and on invetigation find a frayed wire inside the machine that causes a small earth leakage - not enough to get you a small tingle when you touch it but a small boy with wet hands........ Please do ask me how I know sometime - How much does it cost to pay someone to cover your adequate arse?
StevenB
So, in a nutshell, what you're saying is keep your key cutting machines out of reach of the general public then

StevenB
On a serious note, I think this topic has been quite enlightening for many. =D> =D> I suspect that there will be quite a few electrical contractors getting inquiries in the next few days from members of our trade. Makes me wonder what other H&S 'small print' there is that some of us may not know about...?
Mick Friend
The fire thing been there done that. Also had one where the swarf from the metal keys smouldered for hours finally setting fire to the bench, about 0100. The child scenario it wasn't a key machine but another metal bodied machine in a shop ( foot measure I think) - we got called as we were passing to render first aid, fortunately he was only shocked and bruised. Metal bodies every year, plastic bodies 2-3 years high power equipment every year. Kettles kill 100 people a year. Guys its not big and it's not clever to try and by-pass the H&S requirements it is a pain (no pun) but once done if an accident happens you can stand and say - well I done my bit. A 1" nail would have done it without the cutting.
Mick Friend
No it wont fit too thin you would have to wrap it in tinfoil - Now I have seen the company fuse replaced with 3/4" copper pipe

Well well, here I am minding my own business on a sunday evening while the women of the household are engrossed in strictly/xfactor/katherine Jenkines or whatever they are watching and what do I find but a reference to my very own hometown and base for ASE Awards, as well as the fire service college who are regular supporters of said budding small business! Mick Friend
Listen mate in the 1970's it was 'in the Marsh' -all the water sloshed about by the college - The rugby club weekly or was it monthly dance - called the Ugly bugs ball by the students, The local pub full of foreign people swilling ale Oh how I wish to forget those days. CotswoldEngraver
It was a weekly dance at the football club Mick. The Club closed down mid 90's, 'grab a granny' moved to the local British Legion before that closed 5 years ago. Moreton Football Club even made it on to that classic 80's TV programme London's Burning!
Mick Friend
Ahhhh! If only my memory was that good - I never went, I usually sat and had a pint in the camp bar and off to bed early, the second time I was there I was meeting someone in Uxbridge (who I later married and then 25 years later divorced) so I did the tripe each day and back by motorbike in January frost on the road etc - bloody mad. Still nice area - I'm in Suffolk now not as warm as Spain but green and pleasent.
