its good, but where's your error page, if they find an item from an old out of date link in a search engine they get a standard white error page & leave the site.

would it not be better to re-direct them to a search page than lose them from the site?

if I type in (perhaps by accident) http://www.kingsofipswich.co.uk/any

I get this

I close the browser & I'm gone forever.............. #-o

Just an observation.

yep, if you want me to build one send me a PM of what you "think" you want & I'll give you a price!

from scratch, I can register you a domain, host a site, build it, submit it to search engines & maintain it for you & you know that unlike most web design companies you might deal with I will understand what your talking about!

I have just had a man walk in & leave 8 pairs of cheaney shoes for soles & heels & one pair for an eyelet repair.

I could tell from the way he was talking he wasn't local & I ask him if he was. No his reply "I've just driven from newmarket" (about 1 3/4 hours away) "I haven't found anyone locally so I looked on the net & liked what I saw with your site & all that" was his reply.

Pulled up in a Nice car, paid up front & gave a specific date when he'd be back. straight talking & I like that.

This one order has just paid for ALL the time I put into the new "look" website & means next weeks a busy one! :D

Guy called me in the week looking for a repair for his Ecco shoes.

He's from Yorkshire & did a Google search for repair Ecco footwear which brought up this results page & the 3rd link down gives you How to repair Ecco footwear He then searched the business name as shown in my signature & gets my website,

After a quick discussion on the phone he is sending me his shoes for repair,

The power of the forum ..srfr..

You have my sympathy elfman, you are different in that you may have to work with the shoe that you are sent, most have an option.

My option would be to refer the customer back to the retailer.

Yes I know many will dissagree and many will take on board the repair and some will make a decent job, perhaps some like them, I like you think they are Sh..e and just about the worst piece of #Sh..e there ihas ever been .... cant think of any worse at the moment.

Well he couldn't have looked very hard as I'm only 10minutes down the road. In fact I'm probably the closest apart from the three repairers in Newmarket!!!

thats the point I was trying to make Michael, he said he did a search & liked what he sore, Do you have a website? if so did this customer find it? did he like what he was seeing? (this isn't directed at you, but is the principle of the topic)

Have you taken a look at your website from the outside in recently?

Having looked at hundreds of cobblers websites & only a hand full "looked" professional or grabbed my attention, its an area that as an industry we are not taking full advantage off (this is a generalisation not pointing fingers at anyone specifically)

I think the night gardens based on a deprived city somewhere, you have igglepickle who's heads on the wonk, kind of special needs, you have the pontipines, the large family on social, the next door immigrants who you never see.

the haahoos who are the obese family (all out off work) the tomliboos who live in the tower block as a threesome. upsydaisy the kid with no family & then dear old makka pakka the rock dealer!

I understand the point but I dont get why someone would look up a website then drive 13/4 hours because he liked the website, when he could've drove 10 minutes to not just me but probably 10 repairers (Cambridge is only 10 mins from Newmarket) and asked to see some work samples or have a chat to see if they were confindent in what they do.I would maybe even have done a pair half price as a sample of my work for the customer. And he wouldn't have to wait as long and then travel another 13/4 hours to pick them up again!!!

After all your website maybe fantastic but your repair work maybe bloody awful....just a generalisation Lee, I know your works not awful

It does seam bizarre, I agree! its not something that happens every day. But there is no doubt that my website has had a dramatic effect on inquiries! I've had a website for a number of years & this is the 4th generation I have made. But the last couple of weeks web inquiries have soared. It might be because of the public now "looking" for repairers due to the crunchy credit thing. but either way I'm pleased with the results off the face lift.

its not awful its shocking

Well I've just Google searched for shoe repairs in Haverhill and Suffolk and no mention of 'Michaels' :?

As Lee said Michael, do you have a website? If not, then you have no Web presence, hence, no results on Google, although you may be well down the list and not on the first page. :( That should throw up many different questions with respect to the reasons for having one.

:D :D Brilliant going to print that off for my daughter an avid fan and Benefits cheif.

On the guy travelling a distance to get his shoes cobbled up I used to have this on a regular basis but not with the internet, just this,....... Many folk have jobs that involve travelling long distances and their journeys take them through town centres, maybe he did not spot a cobbler on local car drives but did futher out of town.

Had 2 instances of guys from London stopping and asking if we did the old fashioned stitched soles as no -one in the London area did them!!!!!! !50 or so miles away and they leave their shoes to be done and collected next time they are passing. Now if you cant find a cobbler in London you aint got very good eyesight or you aint bothered looking to hard in the 1st place.
