Years ago we didn't charge for making holes in belts. Untill I was in a shop a few streets away and found out what they say to a customer that bought a belt: when you need extra holes in this belt go to the shoemaker, they do it for free!!! And they sold another belt! (Prices for belts getting up till €.150,00!!! )

Why do I a have to do the service for the shop who sells and makes money from belts! I found out that more stores told that to there customers.

I asked the managers/owners why they don't do the service for their customers and offered them a hole-maker. (is that good english? :? )

But that was to expensive! And they woudn't take the risk of doing it the wrong way!!!!

Since than I charge for holes! €.0,25 for each hole! It's a low price and most customers say: That's cheap! And give me more!

Everytime a customer comes in for holes, I have to put down the shoe I'm working on and get to the counter. I'm not working for charity but for a living!

When a customer pickes up some shoerepairs and aske for a hole in a used belt I do it for free, offcourse!

Normally i don't charge for putting holes in belts, but if they bring in a bagfull and can't leave them with me then i'll charge £1.00 per belt for my time. The word "free" spreads faster than the plague and yes you do get quite a few freeloaders but you also gain new customers.i just look at it as good pr.

How do you work that out  , they are more likely to think of you when they need other services you do.

With those negative views...........

You obviously ain't got much customer service or business building skills. :P

time is money.

a sign behind my counter, meant for me, that only the wife and I can see, says

1 = 300

It reminds me to charge for what my work is worth.

One dollar a day, open 300 a year, = $300.

I get 3-5 punch customers a day. It all adds up, and quick.

...Plus, many come in, setting a $3-5 cup of coffee on the counter. They spend that every day on coffee.

...Plus, they expect to pay. It's a service.

...Plus, something we've noticed, in our area, anyways. People dont compare prices anymore. They dont say, its cheaper ovet there, or, gee, thats 3.99! Id rather save my money! like my frugal mom did. If its under $5, they dont care, if they want it, they just buy it.

For whats it's worth...

I didn't notice any customer views on this, so I'll chime in.

I personally do not mind paying a small fee to have holes punched for me. My local shoe repair guy is Outstanding, and he doesn't charge me to do this I usually tip him a few bucks for the hole punchingservice. If he were to charge only $1 then that's all he would get

(My first encouter with him was for this very reason) I bought a belt that fit a little loose and the retailer did not have a holepunch. They referred me to the shoe repair shop a few doors down. He is a little out of my way, and there is one a block from my home, but I don't mind the drive since he has great customer service. I use him to repair all of my wifes High Heels and boots(She has lots) lol

I wouldn't mind paying a few bucks if I had too. I don't think most people do. However if you do it for free then you will most likely have a loyal customer for years to come. Just my 2¢

Walker & Kwiz, you haveboth brought forward the 2 options of payment and free service, add to this the idea of the customer buying a coffee and you have 3 options.

All three are logical, there is not a right and wrong way to go about it, personally I would charge for the service but I will never forget as a child going to pick up my football boots that has been stitched and was told there was no charge. That transaction stayed in my mind for over 60 years.

If it's only going to take me a few seconds then I dont charge. Most times customers leave with a smile on their face with comments like 'I cant believe you can still get something for free'. I figure when they need their shoes fixed they'll remember good service at my shop, and then I can make some money off them. Many customers will hand over $1 after I tell them no charge, which is fine by me.

The only time it p**ses me off is when someone comes in and asks for a hole, I do it, hand it back, they say 'oh good' and turn around and walk out. At least have the courtesy to ask 'is there a charge?'

Makes me want to yell 'Excuse me- thats $5 '.
