Lee
what would stop a feather tip biting in on crystal? I'm doing a logo & on some of it its just skating along the top, its a fairly new tip? Lee

Lee
I've now removed the feather touch altogether & am just doing it with a light setting. Its sounding a bit heavy on the diamond, don't think it will last long but at least it will get this 11th hour job done. Lee

Mick Friend
I know less than nuffin about engraving - but glass cutting I know..... not a lot either but wot I do know is we dipped our cutter in parrafin before striking a line of a lump o glass. it bit betterer and cleaner and deeper. Now can you lubricate an engraving tip? I suspect I will be spending the weekend under the ruddy table again........
StevenB
Special engravers lubricant needed. Opinions vary as to what is best - I think Andy uses Pledge, I prefer Mr Sheen myself \:D/ Works a treat!
Lee
A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO ANDY "Andy I could lick your armpits, you old bean, you." This was an emergency job for Lowestoft Town FC Ordered yesterday & needed for Saturday. BUT it will be an ongoing thing, he ordered 6 awards which will be engraved as & when needed & it was crucial from his point of view to start as he meant to go on. I faffed about for nearly an hour on this one, but just couldn't get it vectorized how I wanted it, the logo wasn't the best & being on a new computer with half the programs not installed I couldn't do it! Andy I once again really appreciate you taking the time out of your day for me! I have made a £10.00 donation to the forum charity as Marks pages seamed to be closed for leukemia. Lee
Cloning no, Programming yes. I couldn't seam to break the market its odd. Cloning I'm doing daily but in the year or so I had the programmer I only bagged a handful, not enough to get confident or make the investment cost effective. Most of the remotes I've done have been Fords & these I can do with the keycrypt. Lee
Forest Cobbler
We have had absolutely no joy whatsoever engraving glass on our Universal 300 (sorry Mark). We tried the Pledge/Mr Sheen trick, we slowed the machine down, we took the light touch off and replaced it with a brass knob, all the usual stuff, but still we couldn't get a consistent result. Some glass worked better than others, but you couldn't tell how it was going to go beforehand. So we're sticking with ordered stencils and sandblasting. Which is a shame, because it means we can't offer a same day service.
StevenB
Valerie, It's not the machine, it will have been your glass diamond preventing the engraving from working. We have had the occasional dud, which for whatever reason just won't cut through the surface - normally the cheaper the glass, the more it struggles. I now use these dodgy ones for other diamond drag engraving jobs. I would urge you to get a new diamond & have another go.

ANDY
what diamond are you using? is it old? what speed is your travel? on gravo i use 8mm/sec speed going down to 5mm/sec if the diamond is skipping (time to order a new one) my vistool uses metres and minutes as a speed so you should be set at 0.48m/min speed for glass also look at your dwell time, this controls how long the diamond remains still when it first touches the glass if it's on zero it hits the glass and whizzes off immediately without having time to dig in try dwell on 0.2 sec this will help the retract should be around 6mm for flat work and straight glass tankards etc, increase this if the glass is more curved when you lower your diamond to set the z reference, touch the glass then nudge it a couple of mil deeper this still effectively gives you a 4mm retract and also gives you a bit more pressure when engraving as its working against the spring tension if the glass is really curved you can get inconsistencies because the pressure varies on the high points it may be worth doing a line then resetting the depth for the next one above all don't give up, as Stevie says get a new diamond and have a mess about as long as your diamonds good and your settings are right you will succeed
Forest Cobbler
Pretty sure we were using a composite diamond, as recommended by Mark at U-marq, but I may be wrong, it's been a while since I had a go. If anything, I found that I had more problems with Crystal glasses than with the cheaper stuff. Generally the diamond would just skate over the surface barely even leaving a mark, whereas on cheaper glass it would at least cut into the surface in some places, even if it then skipped over other parts. I will try again, following your advice on speed, dwell time etc. Many thanks, Valerie
Lee
My diamonds only done about 5 jobs, so should have been OK. Wheres the dwell time found Andy? Lee

Forest Cobbler
Oh, and by the way. At no point did I think it was the machine, I only mentioned which one we've got for informations sake. I am a huge fan of the Universal and wouldn't swap it for the world. hibsjo(SCO)
we introduced the laser machine for glass as our only problem was the time it took to engrave a glass. definately need a good cutter or your wasting time and money carry on! inscriptio
I struggled for a while with composite diamonds after trying 2 I could not get a good cut. (I think composite diamonds are tiny diamonds bonded to the tip) Rather than giving up I tried a Faceted diamond from Gravograph not the cheapest but what a difference finally an acceptable job not the same quality as sandblasting but customers seem to be very happy & I am able to offer same day service. Try one I think it may be your answer!
