Green, Red & Blue leather soles

Having real trouble getting a solid colour when doing leather soles. Normal leathers no problem the normal mid tan / sole stain colour & jobs done, but as alot of makes are doing green soles (oliver sweeney) or red soles (Jeffer west) ect ect ect. I can't get the colour a deep enough shade or to really take. Most people are happy with the standard colour finish but i like to keep things near to the orignal as possablie. Any tips on this or am i just missing the elphant in the room?

Why not try mixing TRG dyes to get the colour you want?

You should be able to water them down slightly to get a finer finish too so they don't look like the soles have just been painted.

Not a bad idea at all. I'll give it a try let you know. What are TRG dyes like for colour transfer?

 

Do you scour the sole before staining?

 

Always have & always will. Even when scoured the colour doesn't sink in deep enough. The second i start waxing the sole the majoraty of the colour comes off.

Scoured soles followed by a good coating of Woly shoe cream always did it for me :wink:

 

That's very odd. I've tried using the woly cream before. Are you using the normal woly shoe cream or are you using the wax colour cream? How long are do you leave the polish on? & for my final question for the moment how far do you scour down?

That's very odd. I've tried using the woly cream before. Are you using the normal woly shoe cream or are you using the wax colour cream? How long are do you leave the polish on? & for my final question for the moment how far do you scour down?

You must remove all of the tanners 'gloss' coating. Leave the cream on for at least 30 minutes if poss and dont use too much neutral wax, it tends to dull the colour. Better to just polish the shoe cream on your machine brush to give you a Matt shine :wink:

Not sure what finisher you have, but we recomend the following option on our machines for bottom finishing, not sure what you're using but possibly the oversize Naumkeg Pad. Ours is Called a Birki wheel, it can be retro fitted to most 700's as well as to our NEW machines as an option :wink: It is continuous and has no join, so smooth with a 150 grit paper and you get a glass like finish :D

does the color on original sole go all the way through or just on the surface?i would be hesitant to use any liquid dye without testing it first,imagine your customer walking in his house fresh out of the rain on his new white carpet!if it is just on the surface taping of the shoe and using a spray dye would suffice.it will come off as they walk but will not stain the floors.hope this helps.another option would be to suggest a thin rubber sole over the new leather to help with water and to make them less slippy and these are available in a lot of colors nowadays.this will also increase your sales.

I always experiment with my own shoes first (& carpet :lol: ) to check new ways of doing things. As well as when i get products in i check that i would be happy with the product first. If i'm not happy with the finish for example there's no way in hell that's going out of my shop to my customers, simple way of doing things i know but it works for me. Being confident in the products always help to sell them.

 

Have got in a few colours for that but i think its a shame doing a nice leather sole then placing a sos on top. Don't get me wrong if the customer wants it placing on, they get it.

 

Normal only on the surface but i'm trying different ways to what works best. Don't you need a spray gun for the spray dye? If so i get a new toy to play with :lol:

Just been staining a load of decking planks, smooth one side to use as garden bench slats, wanted to use Cuprinol Green but could only find clear.

Got a firm on e-bay to supply green dye and made my own coloured preservative.

Does not rub off when dried and is waterproof.

Will have to see if they do other colours in the dye.

Anyone tried food colouring as most Supermarkets now sell it for the baking frenzy.

Feibing also do a Dye for the Embossed Leather items, the colour range is huge.

fiebings spirit dye can be applyed with a wool duaber,acrylic paint can be applyed with a piece of foam.niether will come off in rain. safire polish will make it right for top coating.

 

over sized naumkeg wheel with 150 grit sounds like something we would love over here in the states. i will be looking into to that. 100 is as fine a papper as we can get
