mrkeys
Was wondering are there any shoe repairers that do not do engraving on here ? Or do you all have a little go at it ?
Perplexus
We don't. We just don't have room for the kit and trophy stock, etc. Also, my shop manager can't spell . . . could be a disaster waiting to happen!
StevenB
What about any engravers that don't do cobbling any more? It's the engraving side of my business that's really developed over the years. Shoe repairs are a bit of an after thought in comparison.
Lee
I do both Shoe Repairs & Engraving. Engraving was the single biggest wage rise I ever gave myself. Lee

theshoeman9
I only do shoe repairs & keys & i'm pretty busy most of the time & would like to think i have a good business & earn decent money. However... I have been toying with the idea of engraving for sometime now & routinely talk to my rep about it. These are my concerns from my point of view. Did any of you guys have the same concerns when you started ? & were they unfounded when & if you did start ? Firstly obviously is expense of starting up. I have 4 other shops in my town doing engraving. Timpsons are the closest in the high street & i know 1 of the guys in there is doing it all day long & its a huge part of their weekly takings, but they are expensive. The other 2 shops are on the edge of town but established & are purely engraving shops. 1 does keys as well. However i do get asked if i do engraving. So would i cover my costs & make a bit with other competition ? My other concern if it did take off is would it affect my shoe repair work if i was busy engraving. I'm proud of my work & have a very good reputation & wouldn't want standards to drop if i was busy trying to get too much done at once when i already have enough to do ! I wouldn't want to employ anyone, been there, done that ! & i have young children & enjoy family life away from work, so wouldn't want to start coming in in the evenings & on sundays. Do any of you guys have these problems ? Or should i just get on with it ? I appreciate nothing is gauranteed but is it worth a gamble founded on MY reservations ? Gray
Engraving is the single most best decision I ever made. And I don't think there is one person here who would not concur. From day one I have never looked back. I started off with a pantograph and now have a Universal 300. Every day it makes money. I don't have a young family so don't mind putting in the hours. Gets me out of Mrs Grays hair for a bit. Go for it son you won't regret it.
