at the risk of being lynched for my ignorance,(i stated before that i'd never been shown how to rewelt and subsequently have always shied away from undertaking the job) are there various types of welting? some better than others? is there a particular name i should ask for? and is it ordered by the metre? foot? roll?

help me out fellas cause i'm gonna have a bloody good go at it the first time i get the chance. i'll post some pics for you to let me know how i did

cheers. rick.

but dont enter it into the j.r. competition!

:D

Lets not forget what this tutorial was about rikardo, it was a fine example of re-welting.

Few would enter a pair of boots that started out in this state for a competition

I bet double the cost of the repair that this customer was pleased beyond expectation with the results

and has probable shown them to many people and for our trade thats good.

If this tutorial makes just one member have a go at something they haven't before then its done two good things for the trade.

Terry I salute you.

Thanks for the welcome and remembering me! I really miss being aked for autographs in the supermarket.

I'm not too good with all this computer stuff so I'm sorry if this turns out all wrong.

Great re-welting pics and video (made it look easier than what it is!)

A few tips for you first time re-welters

1) make sure the ridge of leather which the welt fixes to is secure. if only a little loose stick it down first.

2). WATER! wetting the new welt and the old ridge swells the leather, makes more supple to prevent cracking and when the leather shrinks back it pulls everything nice and tight

let us know how you get on

Following the excellent photos and tips on re welting, the Doncaster Show organisers are hoping to include a practical demonstration of re welting during the open hours of the show.

Apart from improving the catering, is there anything else you want to see there? practical suggestions only please !!!. :?

Hopefully all the members of the forum will be organising a get together at Doncaster and faces can be put to names? :? :?

Hi All

I know this is a older post but its fresh for me so here go's.First off it is great to see those pictures and the end resulted in a very pleasing job.I learned to make custom western boots and we were taught just a few minor details not pictured there.1st off, when we start the stitch and for that matter finish off the last one we start with the thread in then next we catch the end of the welt instead of starting at the point in the picture. We also wet the welt for better molding around the shoe because as it dries it tightens up a bit. Also at the toe if you make little slits it will bend (shape)around better.Lastly when your done if you rub your hammer handle around where the ribbing is it will set the welt in to where it belongs. On a side note this site is really a blast.
