AJD2016
Hi folks, as professionals how important do you feel it is for a key blank to have the same shape head as the original? Take Silca YA89 for instance, would it matter if it were made with a round head as long as the fluting is spot on?
grahamparker
As long as it fits and works i don't care what shape the head is and neither do my customers as in 35 years i have never had one say "it's not the same shape". kobblers
SteelCityShoes
We get an awful lot of people asking for the same shape and/or material. A lot of the time it's usually because they're the keys to rented accommodation and they don't want to be charged for losing them. If it's just a case of identification then key caps will do the job. kobblers
AJD2016
thanks for the feedback. In the manufacturing world it easier and guarantees a cheaper product when items are able to share tooling, such as the press mould (round head key for instance), but there is perception that key cutters want the same shape head for ID purposes. Interesting points, thanks guys. kobblers
Mike at Vauxhall
I guess it does not generally matter to me or my customers. However I didn't really like it when I got a batch of union key blanks that didn't have the "union" head, and the head of the jma ya46d looks a bit wrong. But the blanks work. SteelCityShoes
The head shape does make identification easier and quicker, there is no denying that. Especially when it's an old worn key. Given the choice, I'd always order the blank shaped like an original. Growster, Mike at Vauxhall and k4mrc
gavinh
Never mind the shape, what about the poor quality of the latest mortice blanks? All my suppliers are sending the same crap blanks.D`ont they look at what they are selling us?Remember CBgroup chinese cylinder blanks? This appears to be a similar issue. k4mrc
kobblers
What mortice keys are you having trouble with, Gavin? Cheers. Rick.
gavinh
Hi Rick, union 181,securefast,asec mortice, ect. It`s obvious that the latest batch of these mortice blanks is coming from a different manufacturer. The 181`s have tops the size and thickness of pound coins welded/soldered in different positions and the soldering on the bits is so rough it stops some keys going in the locks. It can`t be just me who has noticed this,Gavin. kobblers and gavin
