Watch Repair Gone Bad.

Recommended Posts

The guy who runs my other shop did watch battery change on a polar watch 2 weeks ago the watch is mean't tobe water ressiant to 50 meters, He never asked the customer if he wanted it resealed and tested.

Customer has been back with a watch full of water as he uses it for scuba diving in the local pool  He is now jumping up and down demanding a new watch.

I have spoken to trading standards on this matter and they state the customer should of asked for the watch to be resealed after the battery was changed as it is 2 jobs.

I have offered to repair the watch for him, He wants a new one but again trading standards state he wouldn't get a new one it would be the value of the watch less useage etc. :D

So guys has this happened to you and what was the outcome?

Do you always ask if the customer wants it tested and sealed if they decline whats to stop them doing this to you?

if the movement is available, tell him to leave the watch with you & you will replace the movement "as a good will gesture" & that you have spoken to trading standards & if he decides not to leave the watch with you for repair, then he will need to direct all comunications through trading standards or your solicitor. I'd lay money on him leaving the watch for a movement.

I had a similar situation once when I'd not been changing watch batteries long.

If my memory serves me right, it was a screw on back & I'd not quite aligned the seal correctly, so when the guy went swimming, he too got a nice water feature behind the glass in his watch. I sent the watch back to the manufacturer's service centre (casio I think), paid the cost of repair & put it down to experience.

Not having pressure testing facilities, nowadays I always suggest that people get their watch tested if they plan to use it underwater, as 'once the seal has been broken, I can't give a 100% guarantee that it's still as waterproof as when new' Or words to that effect. At least that way the onus is on them, they know the service they're getting from me & can walk away if they'd rather not have it done. Not that anybody has yet...

Polar heart rate monitors should be water proof.

I've swum with mine

Swimming yeah but scuba diving :?

I have been told by the diving shop 2 doors down from me that he wouldn't pay he price for them to change the battery and test it

If I could be bothered I would fight this but is it worth it.......

Anyone got an account with polar?

If its a waterproof watch you should always ask if they want it sealed and pressure tested..... If they decline, put it on their receipt, if they have it done, more money in the till...

Would make no difference with this guy as he has no receipt, He says we never gave him one my manager says he did.

Can he prove that you repaired the watch?

Are you suggesting Danny denys doing the job.... [-X

No not at all, just dont admit doing it until you are confident that it was done on your premises:D

But as its already been admitted then he has to learn from the situation.

Maybe that the member of staff did not give a receipt...

Very good Slippy.

I personally wouldn't have that sign up in my shop, To me it makes you sound like you have no confidence in your own work...it's negative.

If the customer has the watch pressure tested then I gaurantee it, if they don't thier repair card guarentee states they refused the pressure test, which means the watch MAY not be water proof

But for those without pressure testing facilities, this wording is a good starting point...

True, but those are normally the folk who undercut the proffessionals with the proper equipment :)

Just my opinion, but if you can't guarantee to put the watch back in its original state, then you shouldn't take on the job, or you are wide open for this sort of problem :-({|=
