k4mrc
i have just had my Annual Pats testing done, we have our own Pats testing machine - and i am lucky to have a son who has also done 2 years at college doing just this - so we did ours testing every item and listing it as done took him roughly 5 hours, 3 weeks a go i bought a brand new lighted cabinet and even though it didn't have to be tested we tested it - and guess what - it failed! we sorted out this problem so were ok, but i was under the impression all items new should have the testing done before there sent to us, what a big con! if i phoned the company that sent it, would they have sent an electrician to sort it out or a replacement? either way i will let them know tomorrow as its past there opening hours. please make sure you all do yours and write it all down in your maintenance booklets as insurance companies will use this to deny any claims -
Michael
I can't remember where I got it from, but I was under the impression we didn't have to do pats testing because we are retail rather than factory!! Bloody hell more expense! How much should this roughly set me back?
petercoulson
we got ours done by a company that charged i think £100 for up to 15 appliances so it doesnt have to cost a fortune. And yes you do have to have it done and it is anything that plugs in, key machines, tills, kettles, vacuum cleaners etc etc. If your main machine is plugged in rather than hard wired direct into an isolator this should be done as well. k4mrc
WTF MAINTENANCE BOOK.. as mick26 says. more expence this i got from pete at siserve - 'free' top guy. i bought my pats tester for about 200 quid, and it came with a dvd to 'train' us how to do it - and each year costs about £50 to calibrate. just another thing 'our government' made law! - helps the employers - LMAO

Mick Friend
I am fairly sure that just having a tester and doing it yourself is a no no - I did a City and Guilds PAT course some years ago and we offered this as a service. You can also wreck equipment that has a processor if you don't know what you are doing. Its a 7 years ago now but we charged £25.00 callout which included the first 10 appliances, additional at £1.75p - if we replaced an incorrect fuse £1.00. Included a certificate listing the appliances. I also had specific insurance for the testing. Its any PORTABLE appliance, ie has a plug on the test includes removing any removable cap on the plug and testing the screws on the terminals were tight, check fuse rating. This is why many hotels now have a hard wired kettle and hair dryer they dont need testing - for hotels it was cheaper to chuck out the kettles and put in new. do check you can test your own
k4mrc
I am fairly sure that just having a tester and doing it yourself is a no no it is acceptable as long as the person who does it has followed the training DVD that comes with it - k4, was the cabinette from a company based in telford ? it was from 'Brother' dont know where it is based will look later to let you know. Wonder if they also do mick testing or john testing hmmmm.........
Mick Friend
But does your insurance cover it? I supect if an accident occurred they would be as far away as they can get. I do think rather than guess it would be worth asking an expert. Too late when you fry the shop boy or a customers child I'm sure 'a competent person' comes into this and watching a video does not make you competent - a bit of paper from city and guilds does that. OOh and I can by tampons from the supermarket does not mean I can stick them anywhere
