kobblers
Help needed please folks What's the best way to get welt stitches to pull the welt in really tight as the first and last time I did it I struggles to keep the welt tight against the sole. I have another pair to do and I wanna get it right! Rick.
Lee
get yourself a Myers awl as per this tutorial viewtopic.php?t=1464 it uses a lock stitch & can be pulled really tight. Lee
Peter / Sweden
Forget the Mayers way.... Do it the right way for a good result. One thread and 2 needles. After each stich, turn one thread around the other to make a "knot" in every stitch. It will never come loose. Use a vaxed thread Tis is the way to do it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c13m_kEllGE Good luck
kobblers
Excellent video that Couldn't quite make out what you meant about the knot though Rick.
elfman
rick ,lee and peter were both right ,doing it with a myers awl will get it thight and will also put a knot in it ,peters way will also do it wiith a knot ,now i have had this disputed by hugh but the idea of the knot is thet it acts like the head on as quare shaped rivit ( i once said that the only difference between stitching and riviting is that a stitched sole remains flexable while a rivited sole is rigid ) now if you want to do it the origanal way then you would make your own whrad and use pigs bristles as needles ,you need 6 cord for ladies and 8 cord for gents, if you want to get it really tight the soak the welt in water over night and stich it next day while its still wet ,finally get hold of some wax twins (these are prewaxed threads with wire needles already for stitching you can get 8 cord gents in packs of ten , the ones to get are 144 in length ) it normally takes me about 45 mins to rewelt a shoe by this method, never stitch the welt on whilst it is dry, i have 2 myers awls lee but i prefer the waxtwins its not worth making your own threads its to labour intensive

Ray T.
All those ways are fine as was stated before me.The one thing I would do is wet the welt so it molds closer to the shoe as you go and it also dries tighter then if you stitched it just dry.I use an American straight needle which is longer and thinner and much more flexible than a Mc Kay needle. If you wet the welt then don't forget to rub the channel with your hammer handle to lay it in the channel were it belongs.
