Guest napster (1961-2007)
being a lover of brass key blanks, everyone knows the price of brass is going through the roof and i was wondering what peoples thoughts were as regards the possible price increases that may follow... will we all stick with brass and pay the price or move over to a steel blank to save some money..???? there is also the other alternative ...chinese brass...mind you though i have tried this so called brass and think it is made out of ROCK..!!! any thoughts anybody..??? Lee
I suppose its a case of gauging the costs of blanks as they rise (IF) we all know the profits involved in keys, they are very good in comparison with the cost of the blanks & 15 - 20p on a retail price will probably absorb the price increase ??????????? I dare say as technology moves on we will be cutting keys made from materials not yet discovered........ Lee

I'd be happy to stick with a quality brass blank, and take the price rise. Does this mean the brass blanks will go down in price when the price of brass falls again. ironplanet uk900
I tried some of the steel chinese UL1's they bend all over the place. They might save you 1p 2p but whats the point if they're not fit for the purpose. Thoughts

keithm
On the margins you guys are making, you should all be using quality blanks ! Poor quality = poor service = poor business = Oops, me business has gone down the pan Keith
ironplanet uk900
Well said Kieth, also we should be supporting british key blank manufacturers. When or if they go the help and knowledge goes with it.
hibsjo(SCO)
I have to say that on the topic of brass or steel its what you are given in your order. I too use all the above mentioned suppliers but if they dont have it in brass you get it in "steel" We all use steel keys everyday so why should it matter what we use? Its alright saying brass keys for brass fitting locks but that line of thought went out with the ark.....Yes?......No? thoughts Mark ups have nothing to do with the cost of keys 4p for chinese steel 8/9/10p for brass your having a laff. How many sell the "rubbish" keys with the fancy designs/colors/flags? Wheres the "quality" in them, for the price they should be the best keys on the market? ironplanet uk900
Its alright saying brass keys for brass fitting locks but that line of thought went out with the ark.....Yes?......No? thoughts Not for me it didn't, I think you should copy the key the way it was originally meant to be. It was made out of brass for a reason

StevenB
I've had a customer come in enquiring what my key blanks are made of, & asking how many blanks & how much swarf gets thrown away. He's interested in it from a scrap value angle!! Is he wasting his time - I'm sure a kilo of brass isn't worth that much, & how long will it take to accumulate? He seemed to think keys were all made of (high scrap value?) nickel. I told him Brass or steel. And then thought, what are they made of...? Am I right? keithm
I once had a lady come in and ask me to collect all the brass swarf I was prepared to, to put on her flat roof The reason amazed me. Her daughter suffered terribly with asthma and what made it worse was the moss on her flat roof. The brass swarf apparently kills it off. She used to sprinkle it on the roof and hey presto, the moss dissappeared over a few weaks!! Keith
Hugh-Candoit (ENG)
Very interesting that Keith, I'll have to give that a try. I dont suffer from Asthma but I do suffer with the Moss on the Garage roof. Do the Lancet mag know about this?
