Lee
At this stage, Will you be taking part in the national shoe repair week on the 11-16 September 2006? To help the undecided if yes why? if no why?
StevenB
I will be taking part. As an independant repairer, I think the opportunity to take advantage of a (for our industry) high profile advertising campaign simply has to be done. I'm sure we all know how much it costs to advertise, even in a local paper so, if we all join together, it's got to be for the good of the industry. Of course, we could always not get involved 'cos we're too busy sitting around saying how quiet it is & how we remember 'the old days' when there were lots of repairs around.... Lee
I too will be taking part with the National shoe repair week. I filled out the form at the cutting edge exhibition and will also fill out and complete the one in the cutting edge magazine (sometimes resulting in two promotional packs) I feel the promotion of 2 for 1 is a good and impacting offer. I have done others in the past, some promotional thing in the news of the world where participating repairers where listed with a coupon which was a complete waist of time. I did the wildlife trust thing, which had some great promotional posters from what I remember. But I don’t remember any value in it. Although registered and confident I can make it work, it will be interesting to see what the national coupon campaign will be like, perhaps the forum members could get together to pay for a supporting ad? Could the organisers give us a better idea of what they are planning to get us involved with? I will probably extend the offer to include services such as keys, watch batteries & engraving. And push an entire 2 for 1 week (there is more to this trade than shoe repairs, and since this is an awareness week I will try to make customers aware of every thing!). The only negatives I have thought from my own point of view, come from this quote from cutting edge “it’s very easy to purchase a good looking shoe quite inexpensively these days but with the high cost of repairing them there is little incentive to keep them in good condition. Its just as easy to run them down completely and buy a new pair, and its this situation which is making an impact on the repair industry.†

Lee
Believe me I am also a little apprehensive too, I am planning to write a letter to cutting edge with the forums views following this months poll. I will ask for some sort of clarification as too the advertising campaign they are intending and also the coverage of such a campaign. Lee
bristolcobbler
I will be taking part, if you gain a extra five to ten customers from this week it will be worth it. Also its just after the quiet summer period so the extra cash will be good,if you dont do the promotion customers that you have already may go somewhere else.we need to keep promoting are trade and it is a free promotion. hibsjo(SCO)
Dont know anything about this "National Shoe Repair Week" ? Where did it come from? Seem to remember a badger week a few years back but nothing since. WHO is organising it? (BIG BROTHER)! Something in cutting edge seemed to say second pair FREE? Well if yesterday was anything to go by in my shop I wont be giving away 20 toe and heels, 10 leather sole and heels. Its not the week in question you have to worry about, if its well advertised which it sounds like it will be, then you dont get any customers coming in the week before, holding off untill the offers start!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was nt an independant one man 'er who thought this one up. (BIG BROTHER) It wouldnt even matter if we got stock for nothing its the sheer logistics of it all???????????????????? Tell me Im wrong about second pair half price PLEASE
kobblers
you're wrong, it's second pair free, not half price. haha rick.
hibsjo(SCO)
First job of the week 2 pair goudie hill walking boots. this repair requires a thru sole of leather stitched + riveted new leather heel blocks cast toe and heel plates and about 20 treble hobs per pair. I normally put this job out at 65 quid a pair! Why the Feck should I do the second pair for NOTHING. Cutting Edge Richard Earl in his article goes on about a repairer "blackmailing" someone into having a repair done? Tell me what are our PEERS doing to us Quote "you will risk an existing customer taking his repair to a participating repairer." What is that all about.? I dont think our trade representatives have thought this through. Trevor Beware You will be getting a phone call when you open. This is one pssed off shoe repaire this monday morning. Lee
I personally think some form of trade promotion is a valuable excise and needs to be given careful consideration. I am going to try to put together a Q&A letter to the cutting edge team from the forum members following this months poll, using any responses to create the questions which when they have their next committee meeting they can answer and publish the answers the forum (and probably the majority of non-members) wants to know. It will be interesting to see if they are prepared to answer a Q&A in their own publication! So fire your questions away and at least by posting them here it will give the members of the cutting edge committee time to ‘think through’ their answers before the next meeting. hibsjo(SCO)
Hi its me again. Spoke to Trevor and he passed me onto Cutting Edge Chairperson Caroline Allcock. After expressing my concerns over NSRW she agreed with me that Discounted repairs should be for "non specialist" repairs which encourages me. (its good to speak). Lee s right lets ask questions of them as the body they are mainly suppliers (and Timpsons). By the way they (Timpsons) dont intend to advertise the fact they will take part in the week but will honour any vouchers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What repairs are YOU going to do for NOTHING lets see whats on offer?
bristolcobbler
i dont think many people are going to willing to give a free pair of leather soles and heels away, a pair of heels or a stick on soles is not as bad. will it be up to us as to what we want to offer as the jobs we give away free. Lee
You only have a few days left to make your questions or feelings known. As I explained earlier I will be writing a letter to the cutting edge committee once the end of the month arrives (in time for the next edition) so place your questions on this topic and post your poll answer Lee

Lee
Nice to see the Cutting edge published our article on the Q&A's in cutting edge (page 21) may help other repairers who don't frequent the forum make up there minds. I know this article was meet with a slightly negative feeling so good to see it in there Lee
Hugh-Candoit (ENG)
Lee, in the Cutting edge, on the website page it gives the forum address as co.uk, not.info. Will they get re-directed? Nice to read the article by Robin Healy, he should write a book, he's a brilliant story teller. Anything with his name on and you can be sure it has me captivated. Those stories can be related to many repairers that I have visited over the years and some of them very close friends. I always was astounded when they told customers who queried anything where to go in no uncertain terms.
Lee
Originally I registered www.shoerepairer.co.uk, but cutting edge miss-printed it on 2 copys of the magazine as shoerepairs.co.uk it took so long to get them to change it that I left it as is, and yes if you type in co.uk you arrive here! I registered co.uk because it was cheap, and I saddled the forum on the side of my cobb-lees.com hosting account to see if the idea would actually work or not. Once it started moving and the sponsors came on board (thanks) I was able to expand the idea and got the site its own stand alone hosting account and more international .info. So some members came in at the beginning with the co.uk and others only know us as .info. Lee
