we've not yet invested in it yet, we can't decide whether it will be worth it long term with the rapid advancement of technology. also the cost of the blanks is a factor too, we don't know what's worth keeping and what's not and what the best machine would be to start up with.

can the cryptos actually be copied?

Currently crypto keys arew best left to the dealers.

I belive it is possible to go out and buy the software which enables you to link into the car's diagnostic system and set up the keys.. However as I understand it each manufacturer has their own set of software which costs something in the region of £600- £700 a go.

The Bianchi machine can copy any other transponder key as far as i'm aware ithout the need for extra upgrades or software.

Diagnostic machine will cost approx £2k

Software cost me a further £6k

Initial stock outlay another £1k

We charge £55+vat for cheapest crypto chip key even ones done on rw3.(rw3 plus stock would cost around £1K)

Remotes can be anything upto £200,

This week alone and we are only on Tuesday,

Rover remote and callout £75,

Nissan Almera spare key £55,

Ford Focus £55 all of these plus vat,

All models above the garage would charge about the same plus labour and you would have to book it in. hahaha we do it on the spot!

This can be a very lucrative market and you are right when you say modern day advances on software will make it more affordable (in the future) but there is a market out there just now.

i have diagnostic machine from kickley valtone, cost me 3k and have weeks when i make same,. only thing to advise is there is a new machine/diagnostic box called mp3 (i think) runs on tokens which cost about 7-50 each time you use it, Great investment and can make you lots of money. i charge £50 for rover and can do 10 a week on normal weeks and ford i too use bianchi - i think the moral is - invest in keys as its a quick profit, compared to any shoe repair machinery. :P

Now the point from a smaller business angle! I would say you chaps who have these machines are probably either dedicated lock smiths or have good sized businesses with several employees.

However what is the best way of involving this technology if you are a one man-er like me!

My advice would be this.

When I started my shop back in 1989 you only did Cylinder or Mortice keys and that was it, then came along the Vauxhall Lazer, then Tubular, then Tibbe, then Transponder etc. The answer is to get each new technology as it arrives then you don’t notice the investment.

However its easy for SMALL businesses to get carried away, have a look at your type of business “shop frontâ€Â

If you are using a tex-coder or equivalent as I under stand it the Silca heads are currently the only ones which will retain the code if the battery is replaced, which gives you piece of mind when selling them. Other blanks will need re-programming if and when the battery fails (which may cause us problems in around 3-4 years from now)

You are right Lee you cant do it all by yourself.

You need someone to go to vehicles and programme keys/remotes.

You cant be in two places at once someone has to man the shop.

Today weve been to 3 vehicles but one was a round trip of 100 miles lose a lot in shop if you were gone that long!

The answer to £55 pounds being alot of money is that its not if its the only key they have, recently weve had customers with the same moan but when they ve came back weeks later to say they ve lost the key thats when they see how much it really costs, ouch! mega bucks.

Youve got to use scare tactics(within reason) tell people scary stories of lockouts and how much it will cost. Make them realise just whats involved only then will these machines pay for them selves (and make you money)

Like your repairs people are guided by what you tell them so why should it be different for keys?

when you get involved in something (anything) new and as specialised as this - all you have to remember is advertise it in a position in a paper that relates to the product your trying to sell!! no-body knows what you can or cannot do unless you let them know. even if they call to your shops.
