Laser engraving versus mechanical engraving

Recommended Posts

I'm try to choose between a laser engraver and a cnc engraver for glass work, specifically a Roland EGX 300, and I'm hoping you can help me make up my mind.  Here are my questions:

1. The Roland EGX 300 isn't specifically marketed for glass cutting, but I know that a lot of people use it for this. What pitfall is Roland afraid of?

2. What is the difference in time work time between a laser and a cnc engraver? Most of my work will be on 80mm discs with basic filled animal designs on them. Anybody care to hazard how long that might take on a laser versus the cnc engraver?

3. Will I get fine detail on the Roland machine?

4. Anything else I should be thinking about?

Thanks for your help,

Susan

So Hibsjo, you're saying your laser is far fast than? That's what I thought. I can't afford a nice £15k laser to get me the kind of detail I'd like though. I'm just wondering if there's a sweet spot between speed/machine cost/detail quality. I imagine that's the holy grail though . . .
