windycity
ho ho ho ok i need so help just for a change my kanto pantagraph has suddenly started to mess up when engraving cylindrical items one random letter will just move up off the line of engraved text. so that now i am reduced to engraving 1 letter at a time. i can not work out why, it does not happen on every item that is engraved. i really can't work out what is causing this. The items are clamped ok, the letter sets are not moving in the copy slide. if anyone can shed some light on this i would be overjoyed as i have now messed up a few annual cups/bands and it is driving me round the bend. thanks windrush
ANDY
is it the last letter thats always the issue? you will find if you engrave too many letters in one hit, that it will not line up when you jig along for your next lot the reason is because the cutter head is not going straight up and down, it's on a pivot the further around the curve you go, the more noticeable it is. it is actually engraving in a very slight arc and toward the ends the letters will distort too if you do say 2 letters then 4 letters. the 4 letter bit will be lower on the ends you need to also check all things that will allow movement on the job it's worth checking all nuts and bolts are tight, and when tight check to see if they are actually doing their job put a base in and pull and push to check for wobble check if your reduction bar will slide when clamped check the copy holder tray bolt underneath, if thats a bit loose, you can nudge it out of whack good luck sir
windycity
thanks andy but none of the above, i am doing 3 letters at a time and the middle one some how went higher, next ruck up it was the 3rd letter. its really strange. windycity
ha ha blobbie but not rush proof. its not a setting up or height problem error. everything that could be tightened is/was theres also no movement on the copy slide or the brass letters. this is the first time in 13 years i have come across this. Martin56
Hi check to see if the bearings in the pantograh arm are ok, move back and forth all the way, to feel if they are moving smoothly . Martin

Web_Engraver
I know you have checked & double checked everything, had a similar problem on Gravo ITL , the diamond was slightly loose in holder & moving about. Sorry can't think of 'out else Phil
windycity
thanks guys martin i checked the arm and it runs smoothly but the handle that you turn to move the vice forward-back turns ie goes round with out contact and thus not moving the vice some of the time. from memory i think that i need to check the screws under it as maybe that wheel has worn i think its like a rack and pin ting or one of those screws maybe loose. gray would love and do need a uni 350new or 2nd hand but would also need a panto as i do a fair amount of really old annual silver cups. i'll also check the diamond as well mr webster
ANDY
next to the handle that moves the vice with the wheel underneath you have the tighten upy handle that fixes the position in place follow the rod forward is the springy bar thing sitting correctly in the runner? sometimes that can pop up and you wont get a good clamp also on that side there are two grub screws that adjust the snugness of the springy bar
ANDY
another thought is the copy holder running square? this can make letters go higher the most accurate way to check this is with a piece of clear material put your reduction on 2 to 1 to check this out scratch a long line on one side then flip over and repeat worst case the lines will cross over if its on the squiff or just scratch a line on a piece of trophy plate a measure the ends, still do this on 2 to 1 reduction as any small error will be reduced when you go back to your normal annaul entry size
