ZlideOn Zips

Recommended Posts

Hi

I was just wondering if anyone has had any problems with the ZlideOn Zip repair kit.

I have done 4 repairs to runners now, and 3 have been returned. They seem to go on and lock in to place at first but after a week or so the customer returns complaining that the zip has split.

I will now be advising customers to have new zips instead. The ZlideOn Zip Repair Kit will be returning to the suppliers. ](*,) £250.00 not well spent!!!!!!!!

I said this at the time we debated on these things.

I've got two riding boot zips to do as of tomorrow £60. Apart from the fact that the original zips are grubby, its the runners that have broken, probably because of grit in the teeth of the zip.

What would you do...put new runners on!! and what would you charge, and also what would you have told your customer that you have done to warrant the charge.

I will be replacing the whole thing with quality zips and getting a deserved £60 in the till.

I think these replaceable runners have a place, for the likes of handbags etc, but not for boots. And at over £3 each they are more expensive than Zips.

If your going to tell the customer lies, and that you've changed the zips when you haven't then you may be able to charge more (not for me)

But what can you seriously charge for replacing a runner without the customer feeling ripped off.

At £3 EACH you will be wanting at least a tenner, which seems a hell of a lot of money to clip a runner on...

be interested to hear some thoughts....................

I would imagine that the runner closes too close and wears out the material either side of the zips teeth.

New Zips all the way for me.

Thanks for enlightening us Bonus

It may be that the zip spiral was on its way out due to wear, in that case it was not a viable repair project but you would not always do an inspection with a magnifying glass.

I would like to see the damage in pics before commenting further technically but it does seem to throw a spanner in the works doesnt it!!!

depending on condition of the zip , if its a fairly new item and the zip keeps coming apart i pull the runner down as far as it can go, give it a little twat with the hammer, that normaly does the trick, n/c, i then say if it keeps happening we may need to fit a new runner by un picking the zip from the bottom and fitting new runner, charge about between £4.00 and £8.00 ish, depending on how awkward it is,, if its a very old looking zip matted up with wax and gank, i would advise zip replacement, and price accordingly, i will not be investing in them slide on zip repair kits , w***

totally agree, with the principle but not the method. I nip it with pliers, because you can apply a given pressure by nipping the sides of the runner & don't risk damaging the little lock that stops the zip undoing.

we have done about 15 runners and never had one back - the trick behind them is make sure there the right size (they should be very tight!) we have had a couple where we couldnt match them - when you say a new zip will cost 40 or a new runner for 15 they will go for it also say if they have problems as long as they keep the runner you will take the 15 off a new zip and you can re-use the runner everyone a winner cushty!! :D

Good one k4crm.

A word of caution on crimping slides already on the Zip.....You squeeze one side... then the other, this weakens the central post causing stress/fatigue leading to faliure of the post. Squeeze the 2 sides together under uniformpressure, you can make your own tool for this with a pair of old nippers, just scour/ a half round or square section out of the centre of one of the faces, then flatten the other face so there is no sharp edge to it.

The flat part of the nippers then fits under the zip, the face with the recess fits over the slide toggle resting on each side of the slide. One squeeze of the handles gives even pressure on the sides of the slide without putting undue pressure on the post.

What a load of tosh. The zip needs replacing with a quality component. No crimping of a usless cheap runner, or an ill fiiting replacment runner.

Just stop trying to cut corners and do the job properly. No worries and no come backs.

So what's wrong with replacing an original runner on a new zip then YKK zip on new boot, YKK new runner.

Suppose that's a load of tosh to.

And Keiths dictionary's only got 2 words in it. :D

Not if its the right size and doesn't only last a couple of weeks, theres absolutely nothing wrong. I just prefer to replace the zip Mr Tosh :D

Not at all, Keith makes some excellent posts based on facts not fiction.. :D
