kobblers
3 months for a repair geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez as some of you know my background, i feel i'm not in a position to provide comment on the differences between cheaneys' and some repairers' abilities on here. what i do know however is that for the difference in time taken to undertake the repair and the personal touch given by the independants and also the fact that 99.9% of the average public couldn't tell whether cheaney or someone else had repaired their shoes, i know where i'd send mine. hugh, it may seem an ignoarnt question, but why is it absolutely essential to have the lasts? if repairs can only be done to a high standard with the lasts then doesn't that say that we shouldn't be performing anything but the most basic work on gents' shoes, ie, half soles and heels? as we wouldn't be able to repair them to the proper standard anyway? i've seen some excellent repairs posted on here, so i don't get it..... another thought though, if someone phoned cheaney for a basic repair such as heels, would cheaney be so kind as to point them in the general direction of an independant? (in the manner of being part of our trade, so to speak?) rick. rick.

ironplanet uk900
3 months for a repair geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez Absolutely, who the bloody hell would want to wait 3 months, most of can't wait till tomorrow. as some of you know my background, i feel i'm not in a position to provide comment on the differences between cheaneys' and some repairers' abilities on here. I disagree Rick, your a crafts man....I've seen some of your woodwork, which tells me your no fool when it comes to using your hands. Shoe repairs are mostly common sense, and skillfull hands, which you have. hugh, it may seem an ignoarnt question, but why is it absolutely essential to have the lasts? . It ain't.... Not for performing long soles, or even rewelting, they would come in if you were to replace the insole, but manufacturers would rarly do this on a standard repair. Even if you did want to replace the insole, there are techniques you can use to do an excellent repair without the lasts.

Lee
Has anyone PM'ed or heard from the guy who wants his shoes repairing As I always do when a member of the public checks in I PM'd him as soon as I saw the topic, to offer mail order. Turns out his wife works locally to me so I might see the shoes at some point. But thats the decision for the customer to make. Lee

Hugh-Candoit (ENG)
Quote from Planetuk900, "apart from my moderator duties, Do not have a duty to anyone elses business, only my own." That is where we differ, I have no business to support, I have no monetary gains from the advice I offer. I get more pleasure from helping folk acheive the best than money ever could. That is why my advice is given independently of company or self gain. Those of you who are not aware of the standards of manufacturing repairs for their own brand done in house are not aware that the shoes are encased in PVC to ensure no marks or damage is done to the uppers, this is removed after a satisfactory repair. (Church's) Many Manufacturers use a steaming proccess and Toe chasers that ensures a shrink to Last fit which removes most minor creases, this gives the finished repair a resemblance to a new pair. Any repairer who thinks that they can effect a repair that even comes close to a manufacturing repair by the original manufacturer(not a contract repair) should purchase a pair of the top brands and send then away for repair, once examined you will realise that all previous posts were just a load of hot air. I cant blame you for thinking on the lines you do as you are not aware of the full extent of the services offered by manufacturers. I am, I use them and can comment from experience and from seeing the job done. All that I can do is to offer the best advice available to me from past and present experience. You as the reader do not have to either take this advice or believe it. But there is one statement that I would add and it is this. Have I ever taken you down a path that leads in the wrong direction? As it is Valentines day I would like to send you all my love

You told me that I had a duty to the members of this forum. And I'm telling you that I don't, niether does any other member have a duty to anyone else:period. That is where we differ, I have no business to support, I have no monetary gains from the advice I offer. What the hell are you talking about......I do have a company to run, and My family and I run it well, but still find more time than most, (including yourself) to help people on this forum. I have no monetary gains from the advice I offer. What and I do.......I've given more away on here than anybody If you think I only post on here to make money then you have seriously gone down in my estimation. I get more pleasure from helping folk acheive the best than money ever could. That is why my advice is given independently of company or self gain. What the F*** are you talking about, Please explain.... I don't friggin charge for any advice, and there certainly isn't any self gain. Any repairer who thinks that they can effect a repair that even comes close to a manufacturing repair by the original manufacturer(not a contract repair) should purchase a pair of the top brands and send then away for repair, once examined you will realise that all previous posts were just a load of hot air.. Hot air... You presume that you are the one with the ultimate experience that excedes all....all I/we have to go on are fancy statements. I have put my work up to be viewed by all. and I didn't charge, or gain in any way. I cant blame you for thinking on the lines you do as you are not aware of the full extent of the services offered by manufacturers. I am, I use them and can comment from experience and from seeing the job done. But as far as I am aware, you have no expirience. Only corporate. You have never been an independant repairer. A conscientious Independant shoe repairer, who does all his work to the highest possible standard that he possibly can, because it's his business, its his customer. You'll almost never get that mentality from employees. Yes I am proud of my work, And you or nobody else will tell me that an employee at grenson will do a job any better that I will. All that I can do is to offer the best advice available to me from past and present experience. You as the reader do not have to either take this advice or believe it.. You ain't offered any advice for christs sake, your just trying to undermine the independant by saying we ain't as good as the manufacturer. And I say we are. But there is one statement that I would add and it is this. Have I ever taken you down a path that leads in the wrong direction? O Please, thats embarassing. Just phoned Cheaney, and that quote aint true, they cannot remove creases, as they are natural contours of the wearers feet. He recommended good quality shoe trees. ironplanet uk900
Called Barkers, but they haven't bothered to call me back as yet. But heres some quotes from them. The Barker Repair ServiceMost Barker shoes can be completely rebuilt by the same craftsmen who made them. Whenever they need repairing, simply take them to your local Barker stockist who will return them to our factory in Earls Barton. Sounds good......... There are certain shoes, however, which cannot be repaired, due to their construction (i.e. non welted), and we will be pleased to advise customers which styles this applies to.. Hang on, are they saying the shoes that they made cannot be repaired because they are non welted. Now to me thats a joke.....If it was made in the first place, then it can be repaired. This is were the quality Shoe repairer beats the manufacturer hands down. They are robots who can only perform one type of job. ie goodyear welted shoes. Us however have learnt to tackle all aspects of shoe repairing, we are the accomplished repairers. If shoes have been repaired by a third party we are, regrettably, unable to offer this service and accept no liability for the quality of the work undertaken. This does not affect your statutory rights... What they are saying is, we can re-manufacture, but if there is any problem we decline the job. Thats because they are only capable of basic re-manufacture. Give them a problem, and they don't want to know. They'll be boxed up and back on your doorstep quicker than you can say "uk900" We are the quality Shoe repairers, and shouldn't feel we can't compete, because we can, and do.......We are the best. Try sending your Barkers back for new back linings..........
ironplanet uk900
MarkOn everyday work i think it is the same, except in a case when they change the inner sole. It would feel better to have the proper last in a case like that. It could be done without a last, but easier with it. If you talk Competition work - They lose....... To reduce wrinkles i soak the shoes in water and put proper shoetrees in them. and then i "hammer" the wrinkles down. then i let them dry properly in room temperature before i start working on them. On a long sole i always tell the customers it takes a week to do it. If they are in a hurry, of course i do it faster. But i explain that it is a certain procedure that should not be ruched. I always deliver the shoes with a pair of Cedar shoetrees and in a flannel bag with our brand name on. I charge 1495 Swedish Crowns for this. (about 115£) and ALL repairs needed is included in that. We do about 250 pairs a year like this. Shit, i talk to much again......... Peter Peter sent me this post by PM.. And gave me permission to post it here. I think it is an excellent post. I only wish we had more positive views from all the other repairers here.
Peter / Sweden
This was the question: Hi Peter, what are your thoughts on the quaility of your repairs compared to the manufacturer.Do you think you are on par with them on a long sole and heel. Lee
Gents, I'm looking for a quality repair to a pair of Cheaney's that have work through on the sole. I'm happy to post or drop them in somewhere near Whitehall. Thanks for any assistance provided in advance Starting at the beginning, this post gave me the impression all that had happened was the sole had worn out! Why has the entire topic turned the shoes into complete rebuild ! I would not be happy if I had gone onto a web site asking where I could get a descent tire replaced locally on my car only to be told I needed to replace the entire suspension & should return it to the manufacturer, Its absolute over kill & doesn’t serve to “really†
Peter / Sweden
Maybe this pair will end up at Timpson to ( I think last time someone was asking for a repair it did)
