I'd have done a proper job on my 1 last in my garage for half the price just to get a bit of cash for a crust of bread.

I'm very surprised that Timpson did not offer to do this job free of charge for the publicity.

Perhaps they never read the post, or were not quick enough to realise the potential opportunity that I saw.

My bet is that cad will spread the word of the help he obtained on this forum.

We as a forum group offer advice to the general public, that advice can come from various members each having there own opinion as to what is the "best" way forward. There have been many discussions on the way forward for this particular shoe style and to be honest we are still discussing how the shoe is constructed, this has given us an opportunity to do just that and the original request was welcome.

However, we are now getting into a situation where the member of the public is being badgered to comply with requests.

If cad has got his repairs done to his satisfaction they we as a body should be pleased that we have helped someone along the way.

cad was quick in being able to post the pictures of the shoe details for us in the 1st place so there is no reason why he should not post the results of the repair...good or bad for us all to see and discuss the rights or wrongs of his choice, in the meantime let us give the man a bit of space.

All,

Well, yes, Lee you are correct in your assumption. I'm very much not one for large chains as they usually offer poorer service i.e. the guys with the ideas get further and further away from the bottom rung and thus usually quality drops etc.

However, I based my decision on a number of the threee obvious factors: quality, price and backup. Price was not so much of an issue but the quote was around £60 from Timpsons with Rendenbach soles + welting including return postage. That would not sway me alone but after reading this forum it seemed that Timpsons staff won all the prizes at last years shoe repair competition. This was the predominant factor as this was an independant stamp of approval.

I sent my shoes to their central repair center in Manchester as advised by my local branch (30 miles away). I'm sure some are saying a few rude words to themselves right now so I can only offer a few points that would have made me go with one of the other offers:

1) Enter the competitions - as a rubber stamp it doesn't get any better for a punter.

2) I couldn't see any pictures in the gallery of repairs - only those of the competition winners. (Planet did kindly offer me a link to one of his repairs.)

I have no doubt that many members could match the competition winners however as a 'joe public' I could only go by the info I had available. I would have gone with an independant even if it was a 20% higher price had I had more to go by.

In reply to Hugh's point re spreading the word. I could not have asked for any more. This is an excellent forum and I think Lee has really hit the nail on the head. If anyone asks me about shoe repairs I will direct them here - no questions.

cad

p.s. I will post pictures of the repairs as soon as the arrive. If they are dud then I wont be having the last laugh!

Surely Planetuk900 you aint asking the guy to have 2 different shoes repaired. He will never walk again

By the way i think his reply was worthy of the best post on the forum and his comments on the competition side were very apt.

So come on you guys get a move on and get ready for the next competition and as I've said before, if you need help just ask.

Yes I see but there are several who are pestering the guy on th forum.

Whos pestering anyone....Who.

I am not pestering anyone, If I was I'd be sending private messages.

I am only posting my thoughts, as I would with any member.

I've thrown down the gauntlet, in response to his post, and offered to do one of the shoes free, and post all the pictures on the forum of the repair, I'll even pay the postage. If he sends the other to Timpsons.

It was Independants that answerd his questions, and he opted for Timpsons.

I just want to prove that Independants are Best. To educate the Customer.

If he was ever a customer !!!!!

If he sends one to me and one to Timpsons I might start to believe the whole thing

what hope of we gotof attracting visiting members of the public when they are subjected to an onslaught like this??
.

If I were him I'd be very impressed with the passion shown to him.

Wanna choc?

No ta I've got some peanuts

Planet,

This all seems to have got a little out of hand. If I have offended you in any way I apologise. I am a member of the public and live in Broadstairs, Kent and c.a.d. are the initials of my name. Last time I looked I wasn't full of s**t as I am fairly regular on the toilet.

cad

p.s. I would have taken you up on your offer, I would have been stupid not to, however the shoes have been sent in the post. Please see receipt image.

I would have sent them recorded/registered if they meant that much to me

and to really ve pissed UK off, shown WHERE this parcel was being sent to .............not just a pic of a receipt from post office showing an amount.................

Peter Harris I presume was the guy you spoke to about these shoes is worth his weight in gold to timpsons for highlighting to you there services well done Peter.

Timpsons are under pressure now to do a "good job"on this guys shoes (which I think they will) CAD will have to wait six months on the repair if it is to be of show standard which is what he will be expecting for his 60 quid

This should at least make people sit up and think about entering this years competition?

thoughts gentlemen please

carry on!

Better get your shoes for the competition, I've been trying to get you all entering for years but all that came of it was excuses again and again.

Get your knives sharpened, get your waxes, get your special finishes and get moving it's surprising how time will elapse while you are contemplating and promising, then all the talk turns to mutter and moans about Timpson winning again because you all could not bother to enter.

If nothing else this guy cad has wound you up enough for you to take the plunge, I hope something good comes of it.

A cautionary tale.

My answer to point 1. Many independents on the forum have entered & won competitions, myself included (shoe repairer of the year 1999) in this years competition many independents entered & achieved high results.

With around a third of the UK’s shoe repairers being owned by Timpson you would expect a higher percentage of entries to be from them, simply because they employ more in the trade than any other. This year the competition had 7 Timpson entries & 22 others. Nothing impressive or different to what any off us would expect. Because you are sending the to Timpson have you been assured a competition winning repairer will actually be doing the work?

My answer to point 2. Few members have put up images of there repairs, as this forum isn’t designed to be a platform to promote individual business’ it is a “trade siteâ€

If I wanted my own shoes repaired I would not hesitate to use the services of half a dozen or more on the forum, the work that is poated for the world to see is superb and you can hold your heasd high.

What I would not do however is pay £100 for a bloody shoe repair for a a pair of shoes I had bought from a shop. (yes they could have been hand made in Thailand or India but that aint going to put a £400 price tag on them is it!!)

I would have let the guy repair them who had given me good service over the years and completed the repairs to my satisfaction. Failing this I would tout for estimates which the guy has done to the best of his ability. He obviously got the quotes wheighed up the potential job against cost and plumped for a decision tha tsuited his circumstances.

Who know if the job he gets will be satisfactory only time will tell.

As for postage Lee I disagree with your thoughts, a a pair of shoes is only worth what they are worth at the time of posting not when they were purchased. At this present time they are almost worthless as they are falling to bits so as to speak. As for almost a Tenner postage I can get a pair out of the sales for not much more than that and have done for less last week.

Personally I would have gone for a new pair from M&S and got a permanent guarantee on them, no need to get them repaired, just take them back as a complaint and get a new pair until they come to their senses and twig whats happening.
