i have one of those multiple key companies staff working for me - he says when people go to them and complain about price and go to walk out they have to try and match or beat your prices so that the customer gives them the money and not you! they will try to keep the money in there till even if they half there price and can even go lower than that to get the business

managers discretion i think its called!

No Discount, tescos don't give me discount on my groceries so why should I give discount for my skills?

Most customers who what a larger quantity are business' and aren't so bothered about the price!

£5.60 each £112 please.

Hi folks,

Just a thought really.

Say you cut 30 keys which are normally £4.00 each, you give, say a 25% discount, resulting in £3.00 per key.

A customer returns in a couple of weeks with say, four of those keys complaining that they don't work and they require a refund. How do you tell that they were the same keys which were sold at £3.00 so as to not refund more than was taken in the initial sale?

We rarely give a discount on keys but will always match our competitors offer. We are literally 25 feet away from another cutter. If we don't match it, they get the custom which means sometimes we have to lower the price. We cut a lot of keys for the council, they have a standard 10% discount IF they pay within 14 days. Lately, they have been taking over a month to pay so I've stopped the discount.

My initial point was to see how you recorded a sale, be it by receipt or just by knowing your keys. It doesn't matter if they didn't fit, I was trying to show that there may be a customer out there hoping to make a profit by returning keys which they know work but want to make some money out of you. This has happened to a fellow repairer, he got stung for about £15 a few years ago. I've invited him onto the boards but he reckons it's a place for geeks! I mean come on! Are we? Opinions invited.

Where you think that the customer is trying it on and you are convinced that the keys are ok, offer to go round see what the problem is and fix it.

Usually they start stuttering and try to come up with an excuse.

On the other hand how much time and blank costs are involved? all you will lose is a bit of time and material costs, the rest was their money now in your till. You keep the customer to make more out of another time.

If they paid the amount by credit card or cheque they dont need a receipt as long as they can show that you were the recipient of their money by producing the statement from the bank.

Dont wind customers up it is not a game, you lose in the long term.

Lee so you would rather lose a big key order than just give the customer a small discount to make them feel like they're getting a good deal? :?

Apsolutely! My times to valuable to start doing things for nothing!

In honesty, I play it hard to get. Most "Big" key orders come from companies who generally aren't to worried about the price and send a goffer in and ask him to ask for discount.

I usually spin a line about being very competitive with little margin for discount.

Rarely do I have to concede defeat...... sales technique

I cant believe that YOU pay full price for everything Lee.

Nobody pays list price, NOBODY.

Combination prices we all charge combination prices on shoe repairs(dont we?)cheaper to get soles and heels done at the same time as opposed to individualy?

so tell me do you charge combination prices?

or do you charge full price on all repairs?

carry on!
