Musicmecca
Thread looping underneath and bunching up in the shuttle.
Musicmecca
Yes it is threaded correct.
StevenB
Is the needle installed the correct way round?
Lee
This little grove in the needle. should be facing away to the left of the machine.
Musicmecca
Yes the needle is installed correct.
Gray
Usually a problem with the top thread tension also change the needle could be slightly bent.
Musicmecca
I have changed the needle, I also changed the Thread take-up lever as the old one was held in by a nail. The problem could be at the take up lever tension.
Gray
When the presser foot is down there should be a fair amount tension when you pull the thread. You say you bought it recently. Was it OK when you first had it?
Lee
although looping, is the machine actually picking up a stitch (to rule out timing)
Musicmecca
Yes it sometimes picks up a inch or so of stitches and then jams up underneath at the shuttle. I bought it without testing it as it was at the other end of the country, it wasn't stitching properly.
Lee
what are you using it for? what you stitching?
Musicmecca
I haven't been able to use it at all, I would be using it for light patching mainly bag repairs, nothing heavy.
elfman
quite possably the shuttle tension is to tight and the take up tension to slack thus cousing the shuttle pulling the top thread into it
Musicmecca
I have renewed the shuttle and adjusted the tension spring to the correct tension as per the recommended tension in the singer manual. but I don't know what the level of tension should be on the take up lever. Lee
can you post a picture of your threading up?
Gray
What I said when the presser foot is down it should be quite hard to pull the thread.
elfman
and the tension in the shuttle should be the same

StevenB
Have you thought about one of THESE? I was fed up with the same stitching issues on my old 29k, bought one of these & have never looked back. Where I used to dread having to do even the smallest stitching job, I now know I can do anything with ease. As long as I put the needle in the right way round... Gray
Nothing wrong with the old Singers. Keep them set up right and you're OK. They will go for years....You just gave up and took the easy option and bought a new machine....
Lee
my old 25k15 worked perfectly, I brought a new one from standards as i like to keep my machines near the mark. no other reason. sure the old 29k's are great but the difference in the feel of the new machine is unmeasurable its just so nice to use. elfman
they look just like a refurbished 29k cant see much difference and as gray said if you look after the machine it wont go wrong
