autolock
Is there a manufacturer that still makes new outsole stitchers ,?I know standard and siserve re build them but was wandering if a new one was made, also how thick should a Goodyear be able to stitch
petercoulson
The last manufacturer to make a brand new outsole was Pedersen that I know of and they stopped making them about 20 years ago. I sold the last new one in the UK about 1991 and it was just over £13000.00 then so imagine how much one would be today.....Power also made the AFL (Frobana) and I think there may be enough bits to make a new one but they aren't the best of machines. Sutton Landis in the US dont make new either any more.
keithm
ESM offer a new one, £36,000 Recon only I'm afraid and they will safely stitch around 18-20mm without issues. Go thicker than that and you may contract brocken needle/guide syndrome
autolock
Thanks getting quite a few heavy shoes and boots of late and stitchers been causing some problems stitches single leather soles no problem, even with a mid sole,as soon as I put a veldtschoen or some stout rubber near it I start having problems . autolock
Out of interest will a pedersen or landis stitch any thicker than a goodyear
petercoulson
Out of your interest a pedersen 317 will as it has needles with a longer curve
autolock
What is the heaviest needle and awl and needle guide available for the Goodyear please
petercoulson
Now you are asking, we normally only fit 45 needles because most other sizes don't have guides available any more. Don't think either that a bigger needle will be stronger. It won't
Gray
On the Victor I use a bigger awl than needle. Always wet heavy leather work..... With stout rubber I use a silicone sponge over the sole to stop it grabbing and warm them a bit under the flash heater to soften them a bit..........Oh and clear out all the old stitches first.............An absolute must........Thing is these outsole stitchers have their own personalities....What works for me might not work for you... I was going to liken them to women and their mood swings but I didn't..............Oh I did ............

A 43 awl is bigger than a 45 needle so the same would apply to a Goodyear as to a Victor as the awl makes the whole for the needle to follow

Don't think either that a bigger needle will be stronger. It won't Does that mean a thicker needle was only to use a heavier thread rather than be stronger? Yes exactly. whatever breaks a thinner needle will break a thicker needle. The needle manufacturers are stopping making anything but 45 needles and 43 awls
autolock
Thanks for replies ,are there any advantages to a standard Goodyear head to a k and b head
petercoulson
Not really, be careful though as there are some whb heads around which are a problem
keithm
Not really, be careful though as there are some whb heads around which are a problem Really? If the parts are available you can service the whb machines, we have whb consumables so shouldn't be a problem, depends on the condition of the machine Standard heads are more desirable but the k&b ones can be refurbished.
