repair supplies

Recommended Posts

Are you suggesting that ALL suppliers are devoid of these items? Have you tried any other wholesalers?

If yes, consider the following:

This time of year can be a problem with supplies. All wholesalers gear down for the summer as it's usually quiet. Europe effectively shuts down through August so obtaining top up supplies is impossible, and I would hazard a guess that most of the pins/pu's come from china which has it's own issues.

It can be extremely difficult to predict trade over the summer, especially when it rains for half of it  and demand increases :?

Just a little to consider before making a judgement on the 'Shoe Repair Trade' :D

Keithm,

Just out of interest, why does shoe repair demand increase when it rains in summer? is it because people want to use their winter shoes which then need repairing or because material wears down faster in the wet?

Also what are the current issues with supply from china at the moment?

From my experience, the public tend not to wear sandals in the rain and therefore rely on winter footwear. Worn over a few weeks, they are likely to need repairing, sandals get thrown away

China is a long way away, if you run out of stock, it's likely to take a little while to get here, especially if travelling by boat through the Typhoons of the South China Sea and the Pirate threat off the coast of Africa.

But I am just guessing

I see were your coming from Keith, but basic supplies like 101 pins and rivets should be stocked all year round, they're not expensive items and are commonly used 12 months of the year.

As for the Pirates...lol, we should round up some of the cowboys on here to go over and fetch a cargo. Make a nice change from Cowboys and Indians....Pirates and Cowboys ...hmmm sounds interesting.

i was just about to raise a similar post to the original thread of this topic , my last 3 orders from 3 different suppliers ,all within the past 7 days ( no names mentioned , Forum Sponsers ! ) have all had shortages , Insoles , Keys , Padlocks , Toppieces , Abrasives, Laces , Shoe Dyes etc , most frustrating .

We stick to 3 suppliers for our requirements , so as not to spread the orders to thin giving them all a slice of the cake, giving them our lyalty and support ,and to meet minimum order values so we are not lumbered with the carriage costs.

Like many others who just need a few bits sometimes to top us up we bulk the order out to make it worth processing , only to find the things we are desperate for do not come, and then end up doing the same again a few days later with another supplier.

As the service offered by suppliers has changed over the past few yrs in order to consolidate operations ,and cut overheads we all seem to suffer , gone are the free weekly deliveries ,and we hold much more stock as a consequence , and in some cases a visit from a rep every month or 6 weeks , we only see one now , nobody else can be bothered to visit , in the past it was quite common to get 6 reps in every month.

Not that in am against ordering via the internet , most convienient when you can sit and make up an order at your leisure and look at what is availiable and compare prices , but very annoying when you have placed an order to find far to many items out of stock on a regular basis.

I very much regret that a failing memory means that I cannot recall who smmultiservices actually is . Even though I should really know. So when I saw his location on the members map I actually climbed in my car a few weeks ago and armed with yellow pages etc set off to see if I could find him. Unfortunately after several calls ( at some very nice customers )

I wasn't succesful and had to call off my search. I appreciate that a visit from a rep can be quite useful but sadly the economics of the situation mean that it is not cost effective for a small company like ours to keep a mobile sales force. Petrol is on the way up again, congestion charges in many cities are imminent but the biggest problem by far is the number of calls per day which a rep can do. When there were a large number of repairers in a locality it was easy to do 12 - 15 calls per day, sometimes even more. Now because of distances between calls, parking restrictions and the sheer weight of traffic it is sometimes hard to do 6 per day. This is a very expensive way to do business . And the pirates are getting restless too.

However I am always happy to get off my backside and come and discuss emotive topics such as stock shortages etc. providing of course that I know where to go in the first place.
