dc1984
Hi everyone, My name is David, I'm from just outside of Glasgow and recently qualified as a Non-destructive locksmith after 14years working as a maintenance joiner. I'm in the process of setting up my own business and I hopefully will be able to pick the brains of you more experienced guys. I'm thinking of buying one of the starter key cutting machine kits from SKS. I don't have a big budget but do you guys think it's worth the money eg will it actually cut most household keys or is there any that you would recommend? I will be working from my shed and the back of a swb transit so space is limited but hope to get things up and running very soon. Thanks for your time in reading this and hope to speak to some members soon. David.
Mike at Vauxhall
The cyclone dual purpose key machine plus a couple of boards from sks, it's perfect for starting up. After a while you can decide to upgrade your machine. I got mine from sks about 15 years ago, I never upgraded. The number of keys I turn away is insignificant, so no need for me to upgrade, this will depend on your own personal geographic and demographic situation. All the best. Mike at Vauxhall
Although you might need a more mobile van based option. dc1984

dc1984
I have been offered this key machine for £50 but it needs a new cutter. Is it worth the money to have as a spare in the shed? The only details on the machine are the name (Jakey Key Cutting Machines) As I'm only starting out can anyone confirm if this is just for cylinder type keys or can I fit a mortise key cutter too? Sorry if this an obvious question, the locksmith course I was on only covered actually cutting keys and not the components of the machine as he used a duel machine. P.s. Sorry for the poor quality picture. David. petercoulson
Mike at Vauxhall
Jakey is a brand, doesn't tell me which model it is. Neither does the photo. Sorry. But at £50 it seems a steal, new blade might be £15/£60 depending on type. If you find out the model, a quick internet search will answer your questions. dc1984
dc1984
Thank you Cowers Lane, I can't find any other details on the machine. It does look quite old though. I don't suppose you know where the model number usually is on these machines do you? David.

Mike at Vauxhall
A jaguar e sounds like the kind of car that gets a model in your bed. I drive a zafira, oh well. dc1984
Mike at Vauxhall
Sorry, just looked at thumbnail. Thought you were joking ( and I'd been drinking). Hope this model is not discontinued, suggest you check with manufacturer. Might not be the steal I suggested. dc1984
Gray
That will do cylinder keys only and you can rotate the jaws to do some car keys as well. Probably most of us started out with one of those dc1984
Mick Friend
Is this not a semi automatic? It is very rusty and probably well worn, The blade may well be available as the sizes didn't vary much - I'm not sure just starting out is it suitable it would need some TLC and a knowledge of setting and placing odd keys in the jaw. I had, as many have, a similar machine and it often spat keys out, once bouncing off the van floor, off the van wall and missed my eye by 20mm. Goggles always after that. Duel machines or those that you change the cutter over are fine but time consuming and each time you have to reset it. Save up a bit longer and but some silca machines dc1984
