kobblers
Does anyone know of a supplier of quality leather for making belts etc? Does it have a particular name? Rick.
Perplexus
Depends what sort of belts you want to make. If you intend to tool designs onto the leather and dye it yourself, you'll need natural vegetable-tanned shoulder, about 14 sq.ft, 3 - 3.5mm weight, which will give a finished belt length of about 42"-44". Sides will give a greater length, but usually more wastage. For top-of-the-range belts, you can't beat bridle leather, and Abbey Saddlery (http://www.abbeysaddlery.co.uk/) are one of the best suppliers, but it's not cheap! If you just want run-of-the-mill cheapish belts, then split chrome-tanned shoulders or sides (pre-dyed) 2mm will be good enough. For advice, prices and information, speak to Ted or Rocky at J T Batchelor (http://www.jtbatchelor.co.uk/) or Peter at Le Prevo (http://www.leprevo.co.uk/).
