Hugh-Candoit (ENG)
Are there any changes to last years comp Robin, or is everthing as it was?
robinh
Good Morning Hugh. There are no fundamental changes to the requirements, welted shoe, half sole and heel, quality of workmanship, accuracy and presentation being the principle points. There is a slight twist this time which may sort out the men from the boys but nothing that can't be handled by a good crafstman. The prize structure has also been altered to include a choice of a trip to Trier, cash or free stock ( which could easilly bring in over £5000 of business to the first prize winner) In addition there could also be a free bag of Malteasers to every completed entry from forum members. Where would you like me to send your entry form? the usual drop off place near Sherwood? Best regards Robin

Lee
how do I determine if I want to enter, if the goal posts have moved it might not be for me this time round? I've been building on short fallings on previous score sheets, If all that work has been for nothing then I need to know pretty soon, so I can change the game plan! robinh
Not a goal post move! the requirements are exactly as before - no changes - no fundamental diferrences - no extra work involved and the twist will not affect the marking in any way. Do you want the Malteasers ?
Lee
Robin someone commented this to me today "I entered 2 weeks ago, still havent had materials" is this right? Lee
robinh
Yes it is true, the materials are on their way to me from Trier at the moment. As soon as they are here I have all the envelopes addressed ready to go so they should be with the entrants hopefully by the end of next week. theshoeman9
I was told by a rep not so long ago that you had no chance of winning this competition unless you bought the sponsors materials regularly ! Does anyone think that there is any truth in this ? The last time i entered years ago,it was sponsored by punch. I didn't buy their products then, spent a month on a pair of shoes & they looked like they just come from the factory & i didn't even get a comendation. It makes me think ! Lee
Punch never ran a competition where you had to submit a pair of shoes. Believe you me THIS competition is fair & well judged. I came third last year & second the year before, both times initially (as is only natural with a competitive person) throwing into question the judging HOWEVER each time I spoke with the adjudicator, winners & other entrants (even taking time to talk to the Timpson boys & you can learn a lot from them!) after spending this time around the stand, felt I know exactly where I went wrong & that the judging was correctly & fairly carried out. I also entered & won the punch competition, it took me 7 years dedication to win it, Key is not to criticize but to listen & learn. I've no doubt it will take me many more years to win the JR competition, but win it one year I will. If you or your rep wants an accurate, truthful & experienced view on the judging of these competitions you'd both better come in my shop for a cup of tea. your rep is ignorantly misinformed & you can quote me on that. theshoeman9
Cheers Lee Think thats all i need to know.Maybe i'll give it a go this year.It seems to me by what you say that the judges look for certain criteria, & you seem to be in the know which might put you at a slight advantage. Any advice or tips you could give me as my 1st time entering ?
petercoulson
I second Lee with this, the judges have no idea who the shoes are from so cannot show any bias.
Lee
Any advice or tips you could give me as my 1st time entering ? Nope, for the simple reason I'm entering & am in it to win it. I ain't disclosing anything! But that doesn't mean I don't wish you luck, I know another forum member has entered & he's one to beat so its gona be a good competition this year. \:D/

Any advice or tips you could give me as my 1st time entering ? That's how you learn, by giving it a go. Then compare your entry with those that have won and see where you can improve for next year. May take you many years to reach the standard of the winning entry but everyone has to start somewhere and you gain great satisfaction when you get placed. As for your Rep.... as Lee says Yeh. And as I say.. he would be better selling double glazing, the judges do not know whos shoes they are judging let alone which Wholesaler the entrant uses. The total number of points decides the winner and the Wholesaler/Manufacturer will not know who this is until notified by the Adjucicator. Oh and Robin.. please leave my entry form in the cleft of the Great Oak secured by a wedge of Oak Bark Tanned JR Soles please and notice I did not miss off the "J" 50 marks for Artisitic Interpretation would bring in some interesting entries. Nice to see that you have taken over from David, best wishes for a successful event.
Lee
I spent just over 6 hours on my competition shoes today! I decided to dampen the soles to aid ironing the stitching grove & managed to end up with a mark across the half sole join because I ironed that as well. Looks like I'll be starting the again Lee
