Hugh-Candoit (ENG)
I get mine off e-bay, posted from Ireland for £4.95, no forms or documents needed like here.
Lee
Number plates are a relatively easy thing to start doing, and require no machinery outlay if you are doing small volumes or just testing the water. First of all you need to become a registered number plate supplier Click here to apply which will cost you a one of fee of £40.00 Then find a local wholesaler to the motor trade in your yellow pages, these supply parts to garages for car servicing BUT more importantly Number Plates to forecourts and will be able to supply you. Most have a van delivery service and should be able to get the plates to you in around an hour (least ways mine does) The only other thing you have to do is supply them with you registration number and keep records of all the plates you make for 10 years! When a customer orders them from you , you will need to be shown 2 forms of ID and 1 proof of entitlement to the plate requested and fill out a form (your supplier should be able to give you a sample) if not any one wanting one PM me and I will forward you a copy of mine. Typically the plate should cost you around £5.00 - £6.00 trade and should go out at between £8.00 to £10.00 for standard plates. bristolcobbler
i use to do them, had my own machine were you stuck the letters on and then put it through a roller.we charged 9.99 but they cost us 5.00 to make them. There was the regestration charge to start with and buying the stock to start with £110. we did it for about a year but we only really got our outlay back, personally i wouldnt recommend it,but different areas different customers. Lee
I beleive in order to keep to the current legislation the old type of lay them up, space them how you like, stick them through the roller (also the way I started) setup is now obsolete. they are now run through a printing machine to stop illegal plates being produced (legally) At least with the phone a motortrades wholesaler its only a call and a form, which is less time consuming and No stock outlay, or space needed. I don't do many I am only a small shop but I do, do at least 1 a week. Lee
Hugh-Candoit (ENG)
1 a week !!! Is there a profit in that Lee after taking into account the outlay for a machine, material cost and labour, plus the amount of space taken by the equipment. Or is this an offshoot of the engraving service, a sort of bolt on bit?
Lee
At least with the phone a motortrades wholesaler its only a call and a form, which is less time consuming and No stock outlay, or space needed. Use the accumulator, profit per plate £4 x 61 (made last year) = £244 if I gave you £244 would you throw it, or put it towards a week end away? When you are as small as me, every little helps! perhaps you think TO BIG! Lee
keithm
I think Lee said he has no machine overheads as he farms out the plates and has them delivered ready made? Order = 100% margin, worth promoting Lee, surely? Keith
Hugh-Candoit (ENG)
That's what happens when you dont read things through, you get the wrong end of the stick. I thought you were making them up on your own equipment, hence the profitability angle. Small = less overheads = more profit. What would I do with the £244? I'd turn it into £1000 very quickly then thick of where to go for a holiday in the Sun.

Lee
If it was that easy, we would all be living on our own island just like you hugh, although I have heard you have a scam to turn that island into you very own planet. Now what planet are you from? Lee
