Guest Klazykobbler
hi all a relative has asked me about engraving directly onto wood. not really sure what he wants done. If i was to do this i would be using a pantogragh and the rotating cutter thingy. anyone engraved wood before and can you offer advice please. cheers Klazy
ironplanet uk900
Same as engraving into brass really, except the setting would vary. You need a good sharp cutter to prevent frayed edges. Make sure you engrave to a good depth, then flood fill with paint.
Lee
woods not a problem, but sometimes takes a couple of passes because the grain can give some unevenness. Lee
busy bee
My husband made a special cutter for wood. It is a different angle, probably about 45 degrees, and no flat on the tip, it just goes to a sharp point. It engraves wood lovely, it looks like carving. I engrave all along 8-foot bench slats with it on my IS200 !!!

kobblers
wood with a nice tight grain will always give good engraving results, try to avoid wide grained woods, especially softwoods as they're prone to tear out or splitting. if you're using a normal pantograph then engrave in multiple passes going deeper each time. rick. busy bee
Keep your cutters nice and sharp as well, wood engraving soon blunts them. I rarely have to go over more than once.
busy bee
Oh, and use a slow speed, don't engrave it too fast, give the cutter time to do it's job.
