Hugh-Candoit (ENG)
HughIt doesn't matter how many you did in a day because it doesn't change the fact that Peter did a great looking job which is what his tutorial was about in the first place. Ray Torcaso Of course he did, who said he did not? but what that has that got to do with the price of Fish

Methinks something fishy going on with the Sticklebacks, very good on Pitta bread as the 3 spine projections keep them upright while you arrange the Chips around them. Then you stitch the edge with edible Seaweed, this is the true meaning of a "Closed Seam" I think Dean has a fixation with them.
petercoulson
I find goldfish make a nice colourful distraction from the other stuff i've tried to cook. a little gold between two slices of toast, loverly.
Ray T.
This is for Hugh and Peter Coulson From this yankees point of view, may I offer this. What the hell are you talking about ?I get lost sometimes here with your humor which I'am sure is funny if you understand it but man its like putting a puzzle together here without all the pieces.I don't but maybe one of you guys here can tell me if John Lobbs are channeled by hand or machine?Always interesting reading on the site for sure. Hugh-Candoit (ENG)
Ray, If you look on the end of all the posts of Hugh & Dean you will see the reference to the fish. A bit of nonsence really, we were just expanding upon the daftness and jesting. By the way Peter, goldfish fed on Trout pellets taste fishy I prefer mine fed on Luncheon Meat for a better taste. Lobbs are machine Channelled/Grooved. No manufacturer turning out quantities would open this lip by hand. It is mainly done by Repairers and small scale Manufacturing, although I dont know of any manufacturer producing more than 20 pair per week using the hand method. (that is not to say there isnt any). petercoulson
I do know that a company repairing for a very well known manufacturer long sole up to 200 prs per week and they are all hand channelled by one person
Ray T.
Thanks kids sirs for the explanation.I know Lobb makes there standard size shoes but I was thinking more of there custom made shoes with the really big price tag when I asked about the channel. Hugh-Candoit (ENG)
Sorry Ray cant answer that one. Though I would guess that the Channel and Stitching method would be the same as the others in production. (just a guess). Peter, who is this guy that hand channels 200 pairs per week. 400 shoes, 5 day week, 8 hour day = 1 shoe every 5 mins (almost). Guest smurf
Whats the point in stitching on a leather sole if the customer is unable to see it ?
Hugh-Candoit (ENG)
Same Reason that Toe Puffs and Heel Stiffeners, Cork filling and Shanks are put in invisibly, so that the job looks neater and more proffessional.

petercoulson
havent got any pics but they are good when working properly but like most old things, no spare parts. built for busy workshops when channels kept the stitches together longer, chainstich machines bless them. channeling to me is a much better way of doing soles but what do i know.. maybe mick has one under his table

Martin jones
I have a W.H&B rough rounder and channelling machine I saved from TW Clark and sons when they closed in 2004. I've been trying to get it work with no luck, I think they wore the hell out of it. I even have the parts catalogue, not that parts are available. There must be a newer machine that will channel leather soles
Flash
I scrapped one 6 months ago, brilliant machines. I used to use one all day, channeling, grooving, laying down channels, very busy job in a very busy factory. Still have manual for it.( Don't make machines like they used too)

Flash
W.H.B. Rough rounders were notoriously difficult to use, you had to push hard on the shoe to make it feed through. Standard rough rounders were far superior and would run all day without any problems.
