Lee
My new years project is to put up some new signs and window graphics on the shop. In the past and now many years ago I have had them supplied and fitted, however having watched many of them fitted I am confident I could do it. So rather than paying someone else I am intending to get a vinyl cutter and change them myself. Obviously a vast amount of plotters are available and I haven`t a clue! So does any body have any suggestions hints or tips to help me on my way! At this stage I am not planing to make a van/sign making service available however small odds and sods for customers I may. the machine would in the main be purely for shop use producing signs and window graphics. kobblers
seems like lotta dough to layout lee i looked at it once over and decided the initial layout wasn't worth it. that said, with the advent of all the new recycling bins in our area that you are now required to keep and put out with your normal rubbish we've sold an absolute pile of vinyl letters recently as the house number and street have to be displayed on each box, presumably so some overpaid jobsworth from the council can check that you're not mixing paper with aluminium! if it looks like your local council are going to go that way then it may well be worth while making your own vinyl as at least you'll never run out of any characters! you could also undercut the folk we and others currently buy our pre-cut characters from, may pay towards the setup merry christmas rick. Lee
I did get a vinyl cutter, and have had good success fitting window graphics to my shop. A long over due task, I have started with a simple line of services along the bottom edge of my windows. I now want to do a new main sign, and I have a side window which I want to frost out. Haven't done any jobs for customers yet, but as with all things "new" have to steadily build up confidence. Lee
ironplanet uk900
Good luck with that Lee, thats something I've been toying with. I think you'll do really well with it. Remember theres more than than just text to offer. At the moment I'm looking into getting a sand blasting machine & making my own masks. Glass engraving takes to long on normal engraving machines.. Plus, I don't think theres anyone out there that makes a decent glass engraving cutter that lasts more than five minits, although they'll come up with a thousand reasons why they should last.. But take it from me they don't and they're well overpriced.

Lee
Richard, Sorry my friend I missed your original where can I get? question IT's post brought it to light I started using (on recommendation) Hexis UK Ltd 01543 411221 sales@hexis.co.uk www.hexis.co.uk found them really considerate to my lack of knowledge! you can order very small amounts. Also if you ask them they will send you a swatch of all the vinyls (there a lot of them!) Lee

Most people haven't got the facility to grind faceted diamond cutters. It is a very precise job that is needed to regrind these things. You need the whole of the the tip of the cutter to touch the glass at the same time. If that makes sense. I have had them reground and they have come back worse than when I sent them. I don't know what the answer is Having said that the latest one I brought, seems to be outlasting all the previous ones. So there is a fault in the grinding of these things. In my opinion of cause. Good thought though Hugh Can't resist messing about in photoshop,,, Just kiddin ya mate.
Hugh-Candoit (ENG)
uk900, I like the photoshop stuff, picked up on it with the ice cream cornet & superman, very good. Saw a pair of Superman slippers in Matalan. just up your street! That image of me would not have been so far off the mark 10 years ago. Nay lad I werent talking about re-grinding, I was thinking you could get a glass drill bit and have the shank reduced to fit in the engraver. dont even know how the things work, just thought they may have similiar charateristics to a Pantograpgh cutter, but I suppose I'm way off course. Just that i use glass drills for many purposes and you aint got a much harder surface than Ceramic Floor Tile Glaze.

Hugh-Candoit (ENG)
Get yourself down to the show, Would be good to meet you. Sorry but having people bowing down and worshiping me only happens at religous festivals such as Easter / Christmas etc. Too busy preening the Angels wings and preparing the odd bolt of Lightening. By the way I thought I saw you fly past the other day on one of your missions, I thought "there he goes, always in a hurry, never time to stop for a chat". Regards, The Carpenters father.
