Hello! Little help needed please!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

Extremely new to the world of engraving... Just recently bought a small engraving company from a friend of the family, they had been in the industry since the late 70's, but one of them recently passed and so business closed down. I got a Gravograph IS400TM, some tools (cutters/edge cutters, etc...) and a TON of stock. Since I picked up everything I have been slowly but surely learning the system and reading as much as I can, unfortunately I can't seem to find a ton out there, it's definitely a skill/experience based trade! Anyways, I have finally got my first job and I got the plate and plaque in yesterday, the one thing I can't figure out for the life of me is that blasted protective film... are you supposed to engrave with it on, and then peel off, or peel off then engrave? I have done it both ways with mixed results... this job I am doing now will be done with just diamond drag. The plate is SR2-68 through JDS if that helps anyone... I know that the shadowing can be of concern, and I don't have a plastic nose cone, only the metal one that came with the engraver... Anywho any advice would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! :D

Oh, if anyone knows of a really good knowledge base for rotary/drag engraving, would you mind sharing the link? Thank you!!

Thanks hibsjo!

Yeah I wish I had a laser machine, that is going to be one of my first major purchases when I can get there! Currently all I have is a rotating diamond, non-rotating diamond, and one of those gravoply rotating ones, I really am not sure how to use the gravoply one, it's one of these: http://www.gravostore.com/Product/Produ ... arch=42007 unfortunately none of them have a picture...

I must say coming from absolutely zero experience in the world of engraving has posed quite the learning curve! Thank you again for your help! :)

the "gravoply one" is used as a cutter (rotating)

send job over to machine

take the cutter out of the machine

lower the spindle so the nosecone touches the work

the nosecone should be set at 0(zero)

then put your cutter into machine and let it touch the work then tighten

then turn the nosecone to the depth you require for the job your doing

im sure theres a tutorial on this

carry on!
