Jontheshoe
I agree with a lot of the comments, after 35 years in the trade ,stitching & patching comes as second nature , easy money but not as lucrative as keys , shoe repairs will always be 60/70 % of our trade , but keys are more profitable. Wish we were all in Graham’s position, but I still get a kick out of great full customers appreciating a quality repair I tend to take most stitching / patching / zips home to my workshop & do I them on an evening , Undisturbed . keithm and ironplanet uk900
Forest Cobbler
Do those of you doing so many bag repairs and zips etc. have flat bed machines? We only have one with a narrow patching arm and the boss really does not enjoy doing boot zips, or any stitching where he needs to do a long run, as it's difficult to support the weight and stop it pulling sideways. I think from memory you have a short arm patcher but not mounted on a treadle. If you had a treadle you'd have both hands free to manovuere the job. Flash
Pretty sure some time in the past I have seen short arm Singers fitted with a removable table to turn them into a type of flat bed sewing machine. The leg of the table fitted into the square hole in the left side of the base if I remember correctly.

Forest Cobbler
Your memory fails you slightly Paul. It does have a treadle and Mark can get quite a good speed on it sometimes. Doesn't stop him moaning about pretty much any stitching he gets in though, particularly riding boot zips. I'll suggest looking for a flat bed attachment and see what he says. cre
I love doing zips, I still use my Dads old 29k. I charge around £50 for a riding boot zipper, around £60 for a leather jacket zipper, some short coil zippers in an unlined boot can be as little as £25. Timpsons seem to send most or the zipper work to me and to be honest their efforts are pretty woeful. I pick all the original threads, hit the original holes and change accordingly.
