Happy Dude
Has anyone else invested in one of these wheels?? If so. what's your impression?? I bought the fine grade one at £199.99 plus £25 for the anti corrosion fluid as soon as they came available, we do a fair amount of knives I must admit but it's showing signs of being shagged out already. Though we have probably done about £6-700 worth of work with it, still not the best investment if it doesn't last at least twice as long. The regular stone last about a year and thousands of £'s worth of work goes through them for about £140.00. There is less mess, while the diamond wheel is good it does rip them down, no need for grading and clearing up the sludge in the bottom of the trough, £200 is an expensive consumable. Michael
I bought the diamond one but thought the same. Gave a lovely finish but seemed to wear really quickly, and had a few nasty snatching moments with knives that took digs out of the edge (and very nearly my fingers!!) and made the chance of catching a knife edge worse. Shelved it and gone back to the standard wheel, much better and safer! Happy Dude
simon1
It's best to add one pound to each job And we have the money for a new wheel Simple Happy Dude
Dave Daytona
The problem is diamond wheels are not suitable for sharpening steel. The carbon in the steel reacts with the diamond and damages the wheel. You need to use a Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) coated wheel instead, low heat and long life, around the same cost as a diamond wheel. Diamond wheels are great for tungsten tools (ie sharpening tungsten tipped drills) but no good for steel.
Happy Dude
Hi Dave, do you know where I could buy a CBN wheel suitable for a Tormek T7??
Dave Daytona
The last time I purchased a CBN wheel it came from Speedmetal Tools (in Germany I think). I'm not sure which size wheel the Tormek takes but have a look at this link: https://shop.speedmetal-tools.com/de-gb/en_GB/#sortiment Take a look here too. https://www.tormek.com/forum/index.php?topic=3191.0 https://woodturnerswonders.com/collections/cbn-wheels Do a Google search 'CBN wheel for Tormek', plenty to look at there.
