The machine has been doing the rounds in different store locations, but never lasts long in one place. It has just been removed from a Morrisons store locally, due to too many failed keys being returned.

Original concept was LaserKey, I did the R&D development on the original prototype in the UK for the American company,

I advised them then that it wouldn't catch on in the UK marketplace.

They paid me £1000 per month (18 months in total) to site it in-store and do the R&D using their blank stock, hell it's a slow machine when it came to cutting mortice keys...

was talking to a lad the other day who said there was one in the town where he trades, sent about 3 of his mates in (regularly) had a key cut and kept going back saying it would n't work, then every time that they passed kept saying it -0 this resulted in the staff who run the machine putting a 'Not In Working order' sign on \as they get totally fed up!

Don't know if this is true but still it's funny :)

Who's supplying these machines? Is it any of the companies that we've been supporting and keeping in business for all these years?

Rick.

Mykey is operated by a company called Iconx Ltd - https://www.mykeymachine.com/

The current machines rely on store staff operating it i.e. customer comes in, staff member gets their key and puts it in the machine. It scans the key and tells them the blank to insert. Staff member inserts the blank, and the machine automatically cuts the key.

I know there are rumours that they are working on a fully automatic machine which removes the need for a staff member to be present i.e. the customer will simply insert the key in to a slot and the machine will scan it, select the blank and cut it. I don't think it will be too long until they start rolling out these machines (if they haven't already).

Can not trust the customer to insert key themselves or think TOooo complex - does it require a name and remember the

key its cutting , if a second key is required at a later date

locksmiths usually keep a record to look up years later ... at least I do when code cutting or code is known

customer service with a smile and data base to boot can not count how many times customers ask if I can do a

second key months even years later if code cut at the time

not to mention we can test the keys in locks or adjust for any problems the customer may face .. a machine ! NO no

The one in the Asda near me used to cut everything on a universal blank. That lasted about 4 months

MyKey used to be in ASDA before Photo Me bought out the photo centres. As soon as this happened ASDA stopped using MyKey.

However after the failures of Photo Me, they are closing down a lot of the photo centres and I believe MyKey will be used to replace them.
