Mike at Vauxhall
Although customers paying for small amounts on cards personally annoys me, looking at the facts and seeing this is the way modern retail is heading, this morning I started taking contactless with no minimum limit at no extra charge. My first customer was one of those very minor jobs, I said just put some money in the charity box. Customer wanted to put this charity donation on a card, what a bugger! kobblers
Lee
Traditionally I refused transactions under £10. I've now started Charging a 50p surcharge on transactions under £10 most don't bat an eye lid, a few moan but that's up to them I'm not here to lose money. And 50p makes a little for the faff. kobblers and keithm
StevenB
I always used to take cards for any amount, 50p charge for credit cards under £10 & try to talk them out of anything under £5, however these days I'm more relaxed about it, the charge just seemed to piss people off. Most of my card sales are of a reasonable amount, so the odd one under £10 is more than made up for by the majority of transactions. If they annoy me I am more inclined to be awkward with them though... keithm and kobblers
SteelCityShoes
We used to get people putting things like 20p key caps on card so now I refuse card payments under £5, but there are 8 cash machines within a minutes walk so no one ever complains, in fact most apologise for not having cash and go and get it. I think I've only lost one sale, a pair of laces, since it was implemented. We are having a faster terminal delivered today, so I might go down the charge route for the sake of convenience. kobblers

Mike at Vauxhall
Before dropping contactless payment minium charges, I reviewed all my small sales. Basically put up most of them by at 30p or more, where the market will permit. Example, £2.50 for a 1.5 mm watch pin, now quote £4 but the customer now gets a 1.8mm fitted as standard. Still charging 30p for chip and pin under £4. With nearly everthing ( shoe polish, laces and greeting cards still under £4) I sell now over my limit, the charge us becoming increasingly irrelevant. Simes
I think you all need to get with it I agree that it can be annoying, I get annoyed too. But I remind myself that the world is changing, People want to pay with their phones & watches now. I don't carry cash at all now. I just pay on card or by Apple Watch. That is the way it's going. It's only a matter of time before cash will become virtually a thing of the past. Just charge a bit more! I bet your customer won't even notice most of the time. keithm

If you are being charged more for processing a card payment than the customer is actually paying you, then you aren't making a sale, you are losing money. I've never had anyone pay for something on a card that's less than a cylinder key. I guess I'd be annoyed if it was a pair of laces but even then i don't think I'd lose money at my prices lol
Mike at Vauxhall
I think I'll knock credit card charges on the head. I am only enforcing the charge about once every other week or so, it not worth it. I still won't take a card payment for a charity donation. grahamparker
Lowest i can remember taking on a card is about the £2.00 mark, but we take payments of over £500+ on card payments quite frequently. The more money you put through your card provider the better the deals they will give you.

BrokenThreader
we have never had a minimum charge for card payments and at the end of the week we definatly take more on card then cash these days. and for the record i never carry cash myself but if i am ever in a shop that does make a charge for card payments i accept it what choice do i have if there is no cash machine nearby. mrkeys
We charge 50p if its under a tenner, no one complains Some even buy an extra key or product so that it pushes the price over the tenner and they dont have to pay the 50p kobblers
