Reattach sole on hiking boots PU > Vibram

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have a pair of Asolo 520 TPS hiking boots, which at $300 are quite pricey. I love these boots to death, they have no faults except that during a weekend of slugging through some very sticky mud it appears the factory glue between the vibram sole and the low-density PU midsole layer finally gave way, resulting in the rubber sole coming almost completely off. I have cleaned out the mud and had an inspection this morning and it seems like the PU layer is still quite intact and undamaged (it's not crumbling), however the local cobbler said to me that the shoes are beyond repair, although he hasn't actually seen them. The vibram sole also has no cracks and plenty of lugs left to be worn through, so I'm really hoping there must be a way to glue this sole back onto the PU midsole. The shoes are 4 years old.

Given the age of the shoes, do you think they are ruined or salvageable? I would be happy to take these to a cobbler to get fixed, although where I am from (in Australia) Barge Cement is very hard to come by and my understanding is that that stuff would be the best for adhering PU rubber. On the other hard, Shoe Goo and the like is easily had and I have some myself, although I don't know if I'd trust it to repair some hardcore hiking boots...
