k4mrc
Survival Kit Are you ready to face the business competition? With small businesses facing difficulty as we move into the 'microwave generation' SOMSR are working to put a package together to help you survive the business challenges of 2015. Timpsons leads the biggest threat to shoe repairers as they open up 150 stores across the UK in Tesco carparks. SOMSR are putting together a Timpsons Survival Kit, to help you rise to the challenge that you will face as they open up new stores. Don't wait for Timpsons to open - prevention of business loss and smaller margins will help your store survive. SOMSR are doing the research into the customer experience to find out what makes Timpsons so successful. You will be able to find all the research in the MEMBERS AREAof www.somsr.com along with advice on maximising the impact of your store front. Some of our members have told us how much impact some of the new Timpsons stores have already had on their stores, losing up to £300 per month on profits. Don't wait, act early. The survival kit will be available early Feb so keep clicking! If you have been affected by new business, please let us know.
Count Muppet
Location, buying power, enough training to cover the basics, focus on customer service, and most importantly a low wage with high bonuses. Makes you scared not to make money and look after customers.
mrkeys
On a positive note I had a customer come to me for a watch alteration, just a simple push pin - you know position watch over watch block put pin punch over the pin and hit with hammer - repeat - take spare link out - then push remaining strap back together. Apparently the Timpson's at my local Tesco do not offer this service even though they have a large watch bay, I could go on and on and cover every service they do with more laughable examples but you get the point - these extra stores are damaging the image of Timpson's beyond all rational thought - On a national scale they must be losing hundreds of customers per week and those hundreds of customers talk to their friends, very bad press for Timpson's if you ask me - they've bitten off more than they can chew, last time I checked it takes a lot more than 8 weeks to learn out trade and run a shop on your own lol Have no fear my fellow independant's they've pushed the self destruct button Count Muppet, Fast Fix Elgin and Joe Collins

Lee
I find a Timpson survival kit a bit patronising really. Competitors large or small have been around as long as the industry. Finding and keeping new and old clients is any businesses biggest concern, not there competitors. If your competition begins to affect you sharpen up. k4mrc
Totally agree with Lee on this one , concentrate on your own business and let them worry about you. To be honest when I read this I thought of a lot bigger picture one where independent repairer's almost teamed up giving a much better advertisement for us all, and yes Lee is right I was taught a long time ago to NOT watch what Timpsons were doing just concentrate on what happens within my own shop - get that right and then they worry about you But this initiative given a little push from us all might actually benefit us?
