autolock
I know everybody probably works differently, but how long would you say on average the turnaround on repairs should be.i personally rarely do any while you wait jobs that's because I don't offer it(don't like being under pressure)had a bloke in today with 2pairs for stitched leather sole and heel wanted them within the hour, told me the repairer he uses in London always does them in that time for him, I was thinking more like a week. StevenB
I'm with you on while you wait repairs, I try & discourage them as I generally have enough work to keep me busy each day. On average my turnaround time is 'within a couple of days' which allows me to offer a good service to all customers, not just those that leave things to the last minute. Where I am able to accommodate jobs on a while you wait basis (meaning anywhere within a 2 hour window or so) the price is standard charge + 20%. With regard to the 2 pairs stitched soles, I'd be pointing the customer towards a 3 or 4 day turnaround, if they needed them sooner, I'd endeavour to accommodate this, but I'd rather not do them than let my service to all customers suffer due to someone leaving it till the last minute. Danny King
We never offer while u wait, We might say come back in half hour if quiet. We find if you do and you are mad busy someone walks in and you get a upset customer "well you did it last time for me" comment. But I guess we are all different. Jay
I personally wouldnt mind getting them done within the hour for him if he asked. Most jobs our customers will do a bit of shopping and pop back in half an hour or so.

Most jobs our customers will do a bit of shopping and pop back in half an hour or so. if they needed them sooner, I'd endeavour to accommodate this, I would say that generally at least 80% of my time is already allocated to jobs at the start of each day. By the time I've served customers, cut keys etc, I rarely have large amounts of time spare to fit in while you wait jobs. This is why I try & avoid doing them. I can appreciate that in quieter shops, or where there is more than 1 person working, you're probably better positioned to turn round this type of work more quickly. hibsjo(SCO)
2 pairs stitched in an hour (halcyon days of Automagic spring to mind) ive just done a boot raise for a guy, 6 weeks ive had it i could have done it in a morning but it took me an hour to pull the existing sole off(it was a new boot costing £400) he s just picked it up from me and said i was still quicker than the other guy he used to use? give yourself the time to do it properly and to do all your other work properly! carry on! theshoeman9
I'll always squeeze while u waits in even if I am busy. Surprising what you can do in an hour & keeps customers happy. I try & get on with everything as it comes in Even if they are coming back another day. It helps me keep on top of things.
Tom D
i always used to tell them it might say "while u wait", but it dosent say how long you have to wait .the public i just love them "is there only one shoelace in there?" do you cut keys?.no those keyboards were cheaper than wallpaper,"it 10p cheaper round the corner etc etc ... Dean
I don't particularly like doing while-you-waits but will nearly always oblige. Sometimes, if you are busy, all thats needed is a bit of communication with the Customer..."I can get these Leather Soles replaced for you in around an hour, but if we get busy, you may have to be prepared to wait a little longer" We re-heeled a pair of shoes for a lady last week, while you wait, and she ended up buying a necklace off us out of one of our cabinets, From £6.95 to £56.95. I doubt she'd have spotted it if she hadn't been waiting..

x minit uk
I always adhere to my customer's need's. If they want leather sole's in an hour then I will oblige, The busier I get the more motivated I get. I just could not stand and watch them take them up the road for someone else to have their money. If you want something done, ask a busy man.
ironplanet uk900
To be honest, anyone who wants to take two weeks over a pair of leather shoes is just bone idle and doesn't deserve the business. We can do Leather sole and heel within an hour and we make a bloody good job of em. Maybe thats why we're busy and your not!!

Obviously it's not always practical but most of the time we can, and do, accommodate them. Rick.

chrisorros
Being a one man band trying to accordance two leathers sole & heels its alittle hard as it all depends on who or what comes though the door. I would say 2 1/2 - 3 hours myself to give me time to do over jobs, while you wait jobs or go through serve other customers. I would rather give myself alittle more time and phone the customer and say the jobs been done quicker rather than have the customer come back to see me with a shop full of customers and their shoes not done in the time scale. I think I'm perhaps lucky as the pace of life is probably a little slower here than for others on the forum, so people are less inclined to be in such a hurry for their shoes. In fact, in the 20 years I've been in the trade, I don't think I've ever been asked to do leather soles while you wait. It'll probably happen tomorrow now I've said that... We unpick the stitches recork the cavity, restitch...whatever needs doing, we don't skimp. I have seen my business grow over the years because of our work ethic, when I realised I wasn't coping well, I took on staff and carried on with the same work ethic and customer service, untill we couldn't cope again, then took on another member of staff... It's no good expecting people to wait longer and longer just because your either too idle to pull your finger out or run your business poorly. I know were I would shop... and it wouldn't be somewhere that wants a week to do a job that shouldn't take any longer than a couple of hours even by the slowest repairer.... I bet it would be a duf job after a weeks wait aswell...sounds like caotic organisation to me!
